Right around my front door, there is rodent shit everywhere. This has been a long ongoing battle, and the Rodents are undefeated.

Have tried poison (they shit on the poison), traps, peppermint oil (really expensive and didn't work at all), placing down dryer sheets (I don't even remember where that idea came from). Nothing has worked.

I've never even seen the bastards so I don't know what I'm dealing with. They are mighty sneaky. I don't know where they are or where they're coming from and going to after they shit everywhere. I'm not even so sure it's not Bat shit. It makes more sense. A gaggle of Bats comes in at night, hangs out under my patio roof for a while, shits everywhere, and leaves. If it was Bat shit, what could I do to keep the bats away?

Also we got a dog recently so we can't use anything too harmful now, nothing the dog could get into and get sick from.

Perhaps I should just admit defeat.

Webcam aimed at location of interest, use software that only records when motion is detected. Knowing what you're up against will help with the plan to achieve victory.

Poison is bad. Don't do that. You answered your own question. When dealing with supernatural mice, it's usually bats. Clean up the shit, and take joy in the fact it's made from mosquitoes ;^)

I have the same problem. Lots of rodent crap was appearing on my front porch and since I had previously had chipmunk problems, I assumed it was a chipmunk. I put traps out, etc. and never did trap it. Finally, I came home one day to a big pile of it on front porch and went to investigate. I looked up at the ceiling (it is a very high entry way and was dark) and saw a large dark spot. I didn't know what it was and bats never even occurred to me, so I got the hose and sprayed it. Sure enough, two bats came falling down. I took care of them and thought it was over, but sure enough, the problem has occurred again.

After learning that it is technically illegal to kill bats in Indiana, I just leave them alone and sweep off my porch regularly. I've got some foul-smelling spray that is supposed to keep rodents away and I've thought about climbing up on a ladder and spraying their nesting areas to see if it works, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

First of all, rodents are scavengers, which means poisons and other things usually don't work. Typically they will eat a very small amount of something new and see if they feel sick from it. If after a few days they don't get sick, they will eat more of it. So typically with poison baits they will just pick up on the fact that its poison and not eat it. Thats why they have mouse traps, and typically those are the only things that catch mice.

If you haven't caught anything in the traps, then as others have said, its probably bats.

Insert cheese & a tube into your rectum. Place nice flashy signs and lights attracting attention. Squeeze every time something crawls up there. It has to work.

Seriously, I'd rather have bats than deal with moar bugs. Sweep the shit into garden/flower bed.

Bats are awesome to have around. They eat all the damn bugs that bite and sting.

If I ever get a belfry, I'm going to install some bats in it.
