They are in the middle of the lawn (about 4 nests / holes), and when the mower is close to them, they attack.

So, what is the best way to nuke them? Already tried to fill the holes, but, they dig themselves out.

Sounds like cicada killers. I'd leave them alone. They don't sting, and they help out the trees by keeping cicadas under control.

Oh, these suckers sting... poor dogs crossing the yard.

After dark, gasoline and a match. Kerosene is actually better.
Heh, that might burn the entrance... possibly suck the oxygen from the hole, but, might work.
Supposedly, flood them out with soap + water works.

Sounds like yellowjackets then. They're little assholes, especially this time of year. Their already foul mood goes south in the fall, and they'll attack without provocation. Bonus is they're everywhere gathering food for whatever it is they do, and are near every trashcan in town.

I had a new house built many moons ago. I was on the jobsite every day while the construction was going on. One day I see the lead rough carpenter pouring gasoline onto what looked like the ground as I pulled up. Next thing I know he set the gas on fire.

I asked him what he was doing and he looked at me very intently and said there was a nest of red ants but he took care of it.

Tried the water + soap + screen covering the hole... holy crap, even at midnight they came to attack through other holes.

I had a handy electric fly swatter (looks like a tennis racket, but holds a charge), and there were lots of them cooking on it. Some followed me into the garage.

Next day, they were still a ton of them, and more nest holes.

Might indeed have to go with fire.

Kidding aside, smoke should work.
