I used to use AVG, Avast and Avira on various machines, but since AVG's update turned it into slow bloatware, I switched to all Avira, except for one Avast that I haven't bothered to change. For me, the Avira popups are annoying, but no big deal for decent free software. I never even bothered to look up how to block the ads (even though I have done it with other software and my browser).

Of course, now that I've seen this thread I'll give that link a try.

I'll prbbaly leave the popup because I cant seem to get rid of it anyway:
For XP Pro
# Start-> Control Panel
# Administrative tools-> Local security policy
# Click on Software Restriction Policy-> Action (at the top)-> create new restriction policies

When I click on Action, the only choices I have are "export list" or "help"
No "create new restriction policies".

@ dbarton,

You were almost there. Start > control Panel > Administrative tools > local security policy, then expand software restriction policies, and click additional rules. Now click on action and select new path rule. Enter or browse to the path for avnotify.exe and click OK.

For XP Home users, download and install "filesecpatch" available here. This will add the security tab to file properties without booting to safe mode. Then follow the instructions in the link from the second post for Windows 2000 / XP.

I'm in safe mode. i log in as administrator. i right click on avnotify.exe and goto properties, but i do not have the Security tab???
I only see General, Version, and Compatibility tabs.

WinXP Pro sp3

What am i doing wrong?

It works in Windows XP Pro. Windows XP Home has FEWER features, so it won't work in Windows XP Home.

You have to disable Simple File Sharing. Control Panel(classic view)>Folder Options
Click on the 'View' tab. Un-check [ ] Use Simple File Sharing. That should solve your problem and cause security tab to appear.

I agree that the ads are not necessary. What other legitimate AV program has an ad that is periodically displayed taking up possibly 600 by 600 pixels. My bogosity detector readout is approaching one million microLenats.
