I have a 4890...don't really game a lot. Thinking of playing skyrim and metro 2033 (I have had this game for 9 months+ now and haven't installed it).

I game at 1920x1200.

I am helping my dad upgrade his rig we just upgraded 2 years ago. He is going to a 770GTX and can give me his 6870.

I am looking at cards in the $150-250 range tops.

Thoughts? I am thinking this will do the job nice.

Wow,a free upgrade from a 4000 series is in your reach and you wanna drop some coins, take the 6870 and run.

On another note the cheapest worthy card that is a upgrade over the 6870 would be a 7850 2gb....but a free 6870 is what i would roll with over spending money any day and if anything save your budget for a rainy day.

FYI, 16 GB doesn't help with gaming, 8 GB will be more than enough for many years.

According to this a 6870 will run vanilla Skyrim acceptably at 19x12, 50 fps:

Thanks, I am not a gamer really. I like to play every now and then.

The 16GB is for huge visios and VM's I need to run.

My motherboard will be a 990FXA-UD3 as well and I will be adding a 840 Samsung 512GB SSD.

Sad part is my 60+ year old dad now has the PC bug :) He came out of retirement to get a Cisco CCNP Voice Certification. I am helping him upgrade.

He is going 3930k, RIVE, 1300W Antec HDP, 770GTX EVGA 2776, 32 GB low latency RAM, H100i cooler, probably more stuff I lost track of. I am going to help him install it all in his HAF case ;).

If you're not a huge gamer take the 6870 and run. Just upgraded my wife from a 4850 to a 6850 and it makes all the difference for her. Especially noise levels.
