my linksys BEFSX41 router constantly loses the WAN IP address of my cable modem. Always when the computer is powered down, and intermittenly when I'm on the internet. In fact, last time I tried to post a message, it lost it while I was typing! I have reboot it constantly. What gives?

Is your cable modem disconnecting during this time? I'd recommend being sure you have the latest firmware on the router, and then run without the router for a while to be sure you don't have any issues when you have the modem hooked up directly to one pc.

On one occasion (and only one) I had similar problems with a US Robotics 8000a router & a cable modem. In that case for some reason the USR constantly tried switching to 100Mb/s on the uplink port even though the Motorola Cable modem only supports 10Mb. We fixed it by putting a 10Mb hub between the cable modem and the USR 8000 but of course that is yet another box with yet another power supply etc...

It may still be worth testing though... Before & after that incident I installed several more 8000a's for the same cable provider & connecting to the same brand & model cable modem but never saw the same problem again. That guy is still stuck with his "hub in between" solution, even after a flash upgrade of the 8000. The ISP won't flash or replace the modem either...
