Getting ready to add SATA HDD for first time

So i'm buying a Seagate 7200.9 160 GB HDD.. OEM off newegg. As soon as I get it in i'm gonna use it as my primary HDD. Since it is OEM & won't come with any disks then what am I to do when I need to push f6?

I've never installed a SATA HDD before so I'm assuming I still need to load drivers for it...
 
I've had two SATA drives for 2 years now and have never installed drivers. I'm not saying that you never need to but I'm proof that you don't have to.
 
SATA drivers have nothing to do with the hard drive.

Think other end of the SATA cable. Then tell us what that happens to be. Be specific.
 
In case you're too... umm... synaptically challenged to get what I was hinting at, the SATA drivers are for the SATA host bus adapter aka controller. I'll assume you'll be using the one on your motherboard, because if you had an add-in card this wouldn't be an issue.

So in short, the disk you need should have came with your motherboard, and if it didn't, post the make/model of your board, and I'll point you in the right direction
 
I have an asus A8N-E mobo. I *assumed* that you always had to do the f6 deal or else windows wouldn't detect ur SATA HDD. Guess I was under the wrong impression. my bad... if it doesn't work then I'll let ya'll know
 
While that is true in a lot of cases (Sil Image controllers), it's not your HDD that the drivers are for, but for the SATA controller, which is determined by your motherboard. Thus, it's kinda unreasonable to expect them to come with the HDD.

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about with F6 drivers on your A8N-E, as all the SATA ports are from the nForce chipset which now is AHCI

Cool!! I just got the A8N-E (with the new version, rather quiet Northbridge heatsink/fan - yay!), and was worried about installing drivers for WinXP installation.

So, what's AHCI?

Since no one quite answered your question, I will.

Download the drivers for your raid controller and extract them to a floppy disk. The .inf file for your raid controller should either be in the a:\ root location or in a:\winxp. Basically, leave directories intact when you extract it and when you press F6 at the beginning, it should find those drivers and allow you to choose them first thing. If it doesn't find the drivers and list them in XP setup, then the floppy is set up incorrectly.

so you just completely ignored all of what ribbon13 had to say? on board sata, ie, that native of the chipset, doesn't need it.
