Getting Raptor as Primary Master?

PEOPLE... I'm Actaeon's friend and I have a situation:
I have 2 HDDs... one Regular WD 200GB 7200PRM 8MB and a WD 36GB Raptor 10K

I have windows installed on C:\ (on the 200GB) ... now that I partitioned the Raptor.. I want to do this:

Change the C letter on the Raptor, install Windows on it, and make it a Primary HDD

the jumpers dont make any sense by the way so I'm lost there too

Posting this for a friend... he says BIOs doesn't recogonize's the Raptor, but Windows does (Through this SATA card)...

I told him he needs to set the Raptor as a master, and have it plugged into the Primary IDE channel, but he doesn't understand the jumpers (he says its not like regular jumpers)...

So, suggestions?

Raptors don't need jumpers. SATA drives are jumper-free (they might be there, but they don't do anything) Tell him to set the BIOS to boot from SCSI and then it should boot off the Raptor. Most BIOSes see SATA as SCSI (as does Windows). The BIOS won't see the drive because the drive is hooked up through an external controller, so the controller's BIOS handles that.

I don't have a Raptor, but here are some things I know:

- Many BIOS programs will not see the Raptor, as it is not a standard IDE drive. There is a SATA BIOS that is seperate from the motherboards BIOS. If your friend really needs to see the drive in the BIOS, he needs to find what key combination the SATA controller uses. If Windows sees the drive, it's working fine.

- The Raptor can not be "set" as anything (Master, Slave or Cable Select) at this time. SATA is currently a one device connector. Plug one end to the drive, the other to the controller. IF a jumper needed to be set (say for a PATA drive using a SATA adapter) it would need to be set as Master.

I told him he needs to set the Raptor as a master, and have it plugged into the Primary IDE channel, but he doesn't understand the jumpers (he says its not like regular jumpers)...
- He doesn't need to understand the jumpers, and the instructions to have him connect the drive to the Primary IDE channel is plain wrong. IDE is Parallel ATA. The Raptor is a SATA drive. They can be connected via an adapter, but why would you do this if you have a SATA connection? If Windows detects and can access the drive, you don't need to do anything to use it. If he wants to install Windows onto the Raptor, he needs to install it via booting to the Windows CD, pressing F6 when asked and installing the SATA drivers. This should get the Windows installer to see the Raptor and allow him to install Windows onto it. The motherboard BIOS may need to be set to allow SCSI/RAID booting or "Other Device" booting. Different motherboards often have different terms for this.

Exactly what MonkeyDriveExpress expressed ;)...so have him Ghost the ATA HD over to the SATA reformat the 200 WD and then he's good to go with his current set-up !

Yeah, I was wrong about the Primary IDE Channel, I totally forgot about the SATA interface. He later corrected me, but I didn't feel the need to edit the post.

I'll give him the link to this thread, I'm sure hes thankful for your help.

Thanks.

yup.. I'm thankful.. but I didnt understand half the stuff they said...lol
anyway.. can you reply and tell MonkeyDriveExpress this:
Thanks for your reply (and the rest of you) but like MDE said, the BIOS of my Controller handles the boot process of the Drive... and when I go into it, I press F2 to make it "bootable" and I think that works.. but now, I'm suck because I want to install windows and I can't... when I put the XP CD in, it shows me a DHCP/network config and then it shows a message "No Operating system installed" and that's it...

Try disconnecting the 200GB drive first. Then install Windows with just the Raptor hooked up. Make sure that first boot drive is set to SCSI or SATA (depending on which motherboard you have it should be one or the other).

After Windows is done installing you should be able to reconnect the Raptor and boot from it (just make sure in the BIOS once you reconnect the 200GB IDE drive that it didn't take over the #1 spot on the boot order and you should be fine).

EDIT: From a floppy.

jiffy has it right above -- the os will see the ide drives first and therefore assign drive letters to them first. so if he wants the raptor to be c he will have to disconnect the ide drives first and then install the the os...

You do not have to disconnect your IDE drives, you set the boot proceedure in bios and load the sata drivers with F6
I installed mine with 2-120gig WD IDE and 2- 30 gig IBM and 2- WD Raptors in my setup without disconnecting any IDE drives.
You just press F6 and load the sata drivers and you should be good to go.

I find that if I install XP on a machine with SCSI/SATA/RAID as the main drive and a standard IDE drive plugged into the IDE on the motherboard I can install fine but the bootloader installs on the standard drive despite the O/S installing on the SCSI etc.
I always pull and IDE drives before installing XP

You are on the right track though, the Raptor is a good use as OS main drive, especially without being thrashed as a data drive too.
