Hello, i'm in high school and am trying to install a printer that is directly hooked up to a computer but the computer says i need administrative powers. I contacted the admins of the school but they have yet to react. I'm looking for suggestions on how to install the printer without admin powers. i have the drivers but i cant select local printer on teh add a new printer options. is there a way to do it with cmd since that isnt blocked off? any other suggestions will be greatly appritiated. What would help best is some program that would install the printer cause apparently i can run any exe on the pcs but i cant install a printer? our school admins are not very smart

First of all: I said that the admins are not very smart because i can install any program on any computer. So if I were to bring a virus on a flash drive, i could install it. They dont block that off but instead block off the add a new printer wizard. I'm not against a limited account, I am however against blocking off functions that might be needed by people and couldnt possible be abused.

Secondly: This is for school. I need to print a large amount of files for debate and the network printer takes too long to print since all the pdfs have to go through the network. A direct printer would be much faster. I'm sorry for my bad spelling amper but you shouldn't be talking.

The question mark at the end of that statement makes no sense. Are you commanding a question?

Anyway, suggestions would still be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, you can install programs, but you will be installing them under a limited account's privs. Some software will not install correctly without admin privs, and some will. And yes, you can run any .exe, but it will run with the privelege level of your limited account, meaning that there will be some things it can't do.

Lastly, you should give the school admins a little more credit. They don't want you installing printers because installing printers, as you've seen, requires installing drivers. Surely you can understand why they don't want you installing drivers, or third-party devices that they will probably be called on to support. Why can't you just transfer whatever it is you want to print to a machine that you control, and print it from there?

Just FYI, a large number of the people in AT are sysadmins (I'm not one of them), so they have this thing about helping people get around other sysadmins :). In general this is not a good place to post questions about how to work around the rules.

Sorry to sound daft but can you not just use the computer that's connected to the printer to get it printed?
