Getting old mobo to see sata hdd?

So I have this Barton/Asus a7n8x-e rig sitting around doing nothing, though I'd pop a 1TB hdd in it and make a home server out of it. I make sure the SATA jumpers are set to enabled, fire it up...and the hdd doesn't show up in bios. Matter of fact, I don't even see a SATA enable/disable toggle in the bios anywhere. If I let it get beyond the post screen, there's some text Silicon image sataraid bios blah blah, Press ctrl+s or f4 to enter RAID utility, then lists the hdd. Doing either of the keypresses to enter the Raid utility does nothing.

Anyone remember how to get a sata hdd recognized by these mobos? any help appreciated.

I believe you're going to need to manually load the SI SATA/Raid drivers - easiest way of course is with a floppy. If i remember correctly A few of the old but newer interation NF2 boards would actually properly recognize SATA natively like some of the newer Abit NF7-S or newer Asus boads, though they were probably running in IDE (lower DMA mode) as compared to true SATA when proper SATA controller drivers are loaded.

Thanks. I'm talking before I even get to the stage of loading an OS though. As it sits, it won't boot off the cd, it goes straight to that "enter raid utility" screen.

NP. In this situation, barring you not having a floppy around to load SATA drivers - if you can use an PATA drive I would load the OS on that then clone over to the SATA after loading the SIL driver either from floppy or manually through the OS-device manager etc... One place you can go is to pcper.com they have some Asus gurus over there in the Asus section that still remember the old Asus mobos. They should be able to help out.

After verifying that the latest bios version is installed, you might
try clearing the motherboard CMOS, usually done by moving a jumper
while the power supply is disconnected.
Also check the HD documentation for jumper settings on the cable end of the HD.

Did you make sure the HDD was set to Sata I mode, 1.5gbs.
Do new HDDs even have hat jumper option..?

My old A7n8x-e deluxe used to have my 2 sata drives in it, a sata 1 drive and a sata 2 drive so it definatly works.
MAybe its because it doesnt know what a terabyte is since when the mobo was made 500gb wasnt even on the horizon lol

also, are you pressing f6 at the beginin of the xp cd loading bit or are you installing vista/w7?

You might want to try resetting the bios. If you had a RAID setup last time you used the board, your hard drive may not show up correctly.

Thanks all. Seems the problem was deeper, the bios just wasn't ready to accept the hdd either because of sata or size, so it had to be tweaked. Found my solution HERE. Its up and working now though, busily serving files 🙂
