Of all three, I'd prolly get DLP.
Set will last quite a while, just need to replace the bulb.
also, if you XBOX alot, I think it outputs to 720P, not really sure.

If you haven't figured it out yet, you're going to get a bunch of different people claiming that in general one technology is better than another.

If you can, go to a store that specialized in HT and look at some different models. Hopefully they'll have them calibrated fairly well and you'll get a sense of what you like better. Try to look at specific models you're planning on buying as quality is really a model by model thing.

If you have a totally light controlled room and want something really big, check out front projectors too.

Few hundred dollars. Check the MTBF of the different sets and work out how long that would be with your daily usage if you're worried about it.

I'm quite happy with my Infocus 4805 still. It's not HD, but I don't really have any HD source besides my computer yet. I'd get it again.

I got one for $999 including a screen back in winter. Money saved towards a new bulb eventually? (or towards a sound system if I didn't have one already).

Front projection isn't for everyone though.

what is the difference in HDTV, EDTV, DLP, projection HDTV, LCD HDTV

Would the standard HDTV CRT Widescreen be the best bet? I dont mind the weight.

HDTV is higher resolution than EDTV.

My EDTV native res is 854x480p

HD sets are going to be 1280x720p or 1920x1080p or 1920x1080i

Since I watch DVDs 95% of the time, EDTV makes sense for a resolution for me.

DLP, LCD, CRT, and plasma are all display technologies that can come in different resoluitons.

Are you sure you don't mind the weight of a regular CRT? I don't even know how big they come, but at 212pounds my old 36" wega was a beast. If you only have to move it once though, it could be a good option.

the reason is, I was talked into doing a CRT simply because this.

Plasma - has to be recharged
DLP - Replace bulbs
LCD - not true colors
projection - change bulbs

CRT - Heavy, but minimal maintence

am I wrong?

Yeah, one of the things CRT has going for it is that if you get a good one it should last you quite a while without scheduled replacements.

I have no doubts that my 4805 was the better decision then the wega though. (both were similar in price)

Sorry, I didn't see you say that before.

If you can get light control, projector can work well in small rooms too. If it's a size issue, it will certainly take up less space than a big CRT would. My old 10'x12' dorm room really opened up when the wega was replaced.

I use a VCR as my tuner for SD TV and haven't gotten into HD yet.

My projector is based off it and am very happy with it, but I wouldn't necessarily say its your best bet.

For one thing, if you're sensitive to rainbow effect, a DLP could be a bad choice for you.
You should go out and see some in person before you make a decision what technology you want to use.

would this be the way to go, print one of these off, take it to my local sears store, and do it cheap?

Officemax has let me do something similar in the past (including price of shipping). I called ahead and asked what their policy was ahead of time though. In general pricematching for stores is usually brick and mortar stores that are physically located within a certain distance and are authorized resellers.

I'm not sure what the Sears policy is.

Again, look at them before you get one. If you can, bring in a DVD or something that has a black background with a small number of bright shapes on it (like opening credits). Have them play it for you on a set in the store and see if you see rainbows on it moving your eyes side to side quickly. You'll probably be able to see rainbow effect if you do that and you'll be able to tell how much that bothers you (some people can get a sick feeling from it for example).
