My parents gave me a best buy gift card to help pay for a laptop, but there's not a chance I'm going to get it at best buy. Can I buy something with the card and return it to get the cash?

dude that sux, u should send them links to those visa "gift cards" use it like credit card, accepted everywhere

Grrr, they thought they were doing me a favor by giving me the gift card instead of an ipod. At least I could have returned the Ipod.

I know I sound ungrateful. I'm not upset at their kindness, but they know I'm particular about my computer stuff that's why I just wish they would have asked instead of trying to keep it a surprise.

Since always, unless you have a receipt.

Honestly, give cards are the worst gifts. Why would you want to trade in your money for a store's play money?

They arent the worst..but in this situation they arent the "best".

If your in CA, just go into the store and ask for cash.

Can you elaborate on this a little bit. I got a $50 sharper image card today that I'd like to cash out if possible.

Q.4. Can the holder of a gift certificate or gift card redeem it for cash?

A. This depends on the policy of the seller. The gift certificate law states that a seller must redeem a gift certificate or gift card sold after January 1, 1997 for its cash value, or replace it with a new certificate or card at no cost12. However, California?s Legislative Counsel has concluded that a seller is not required to redeem a gift certificate in cash when requested by a consumer13. Thus, some gift certificate sellers redeem the gift certificate for cash or a combination of merchandise and cash, while some issue a new certificate for any balance remaining after the original certificate is redeemed. A gift certificate or gift card without an expiration date is valid until it is redeemed or replaced14.

Sometimes, a gift certificate or gift card is sold to the purchaser as a gift for another person (the ?recipient?). In this case, the seller may choose to state a date on the gift certificate or gift card by which the recipient must redeem it. Since an expiration date normally is not permitted by the gift certificate law, a seller that chooses to state a redemption date on a gift card or gift certificate must give the purchaser a full refund of the amount paid for the certificate or card if the recipient does not redeem it by the redemption date15.

My parents did that to me last year. This year they gave me a $100 gift card to... get this... Dell.

WTF? 😕

Last year I ended up using the card by buying my sister a router (she paid me back) and spending the rest on DVDs. I bought season one of Kids in the Hall. Today my sister gave me season two 🙂

Anyway, how much is the card worth?

best buy gift cards are just american express cards, usable anywhere, last i checked. just look on the back, shoulld be a 15 digit amex number. scratch off the bit and there are the other 4 numbers.

Are you serious? I lightly stratched the part after the numbers and sure enough it started to come off. I don't want to void the card or anything. It says not a credit or debit card on the back.
