getting microsoft vpn to work with linksys wrt54g

Was wondering if anyone has successfully resolved issue of getting a microsoft vpn to connect using a linksys wrt54g v5. Have enabled ipsec passthrough, forwarded all ports necesary. Updated to latest firmware. Hell even put pc in question in DMZ. All firewalls turned off and it still bombs every time.

Have read many suggestions and all point to using dd-wrt firmware to resolve issue. Unfortunately this is not an option since user is not network savvy. Has anyone done anything to make this work?
 
You could try to connect to internet directly bypassing router to see if it being caused by router issues.
 
I have a WRT54G v2 running the Linksys firmware version 4.20 and with IPSEC passthrough enabled, the Windows XP VPN client has no trouble connecting to multiple remote VPN servers that I use now and then for work.

When you say that the connection "bombs", what EXACTLY is happening? Does the client give an error message, does it seem like it's not even trying to connect, does it connect but can't access resources on the remote network?

Also, are you trying to connect to a computer behind the Linksys router, or are you trying to use a computer behind the router to connect to a remote VPN server at a different location?
 
I remember the WRT54G being a pain in the ass when trying to connect to our VPN. I believe it was a firmware issue that Linksys was aware of, but the fix wasn't available yet and we needed to get the person connected, so the user purchased a different router. Unfortunately, I didn't follow the issue further after replacing the router, so I can't be any help. From the sound of it, you already upgraded to the latest firmware, so it sounds like they haven't fixed it yet.

Upgrading to dd-wrt is a good option, but you mentioned you preferred not to go this route. I also remember someone mentioned changing from the default 192.168.1.x subnet to something else. You might want to give that a shot before
A) finally breaking down and going dd-wrt
B) throwing the router out and get another

The v5/v6 revisions are plagued with a firmware bug that disables the required protocols for the VPN to properly work. I know for a fact GRE is disabled, as well 2 others (can't remember off the the top of my head).

 
I've done several inbound Windows VPNs (all of those were PPTP) through Linksys WRT54G routers. Not V5 routers, though.

Support of SOHO routers for inbound Microsoft VPNs is somewhat of a crapshoot. Vendors will have firmware that works, then they'll update it and it won't work, then they'll update and it'll work again.

It never hurts to test the VPN connection from INSIDE your network to be sure that the necessary firewall holes are present.

Here is the equipment we use:

Router: Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router Ver 5 or Ver 6
Connection: ATT(SBC) DSL
Modem: Speedstream 4100 or Speedstream 4200
OS: Windows XP SP2
VPN Client: Microsoft Native

Problem:

With either wired or wireless connections, when we tried to connect to our VPN server, we would get an Error 619 on 99% of our connection attempts. When we did get a connection, we couldn?t do anything and after a few minutes, the connection would drop.
