Getting Married

After nearly three years of being engaged we have finally decided to get married. Originally it was going to be after I graduate but now I will only have an internship left so we decided to go ahead and make plans for a November wedding.

We basically need to have a pretty cheap ceremony and reception for maybe 20 people. I am hoping to get some ideas from the ATOT crew. We were looking at a Dave and Busters reception but there isnt a price listed. Excluding the rings, dress, and certificate I would like to keep it as cheap as possible, but not totally ghettofied.

Maybe you should wait until you can afford something a bit more, um, upscale? You know, maybe Chucky Cheese?

Dave and Buster's?? No matter what your fiance thinks, its a crappy idea. Wait until you can afford something nice, I doubt as a little girl she dreamt of a reception at a "video game palace/bar"

Do you know that "fiance" refers to the man? I suggest changing it in your signature as well. The woman is "fiancee" with an accent on the first e.

Edit: She says it was her idea to have the reception there and that she isnt looking for a fairy tale kids dream. She said she loves D&B.
 
My wedding was very frugal but a tasteful and fun affair.

We married at an outdoor gazebo overlooking a pretty pond in a public park,it was free

Cost of license and JP -$75

We held a dinner reception in a lovely chinese restaurant which had great lighting and was decorated in lovely pastel colors. $300 including tip bought enough food to feed 20 people and some leftover for nibblies later.

After the dinner we held an after party at the home of our bestman/matron of honor

$150 worth of beer,wine,malibu rum was served

our wedding cake, a 2 tier beautifully decorated cake from a baker's outlet-$38
champage toast provided as a gift by my co-workers

I did my own flowers and bridal headpiece, bought a gorgous gown that was deeply discounted, hunted dollar stores for favors (gave out lovely candles and incense burner sets)

registred on the web with Mr Tux and outfitted the men very inexpensively


my attendents filmed the wedding and took pics-no need for a photographer.From what I've seen of the pics and video thus far, a beautiful job was done !


We had a great wedding for well under $1,500 and that includes wedding rings.People are still commenting on how much fun they had and what a beautiful wedding it was.

Remember, you guys have the money which means you are in charge not the wedding vendors.Don't be afraid to negotiate for what you want.Also,think about the details that are important to you. For us it was that our friends be well fed and offered plenty to drink.We didn't want a million person formal circus that would have forced our friends to buy expensive clothing or other things they couldn't afford. I wanted it pretty,intimate and fun and think we suceeded beautifully.

Do they offer ringside receptions with buffets to choose from? D&B does. Do they have a selection of alcohol other than Bud vs Mich Lite?? D&B does. Its really not a fair comparison. I am not saying we should have our reception at a LAN party or a Dolphins game... hmmmm dolphins game... oh wait you have distracted me... next post.

Yeah, yeah youre right she was a bit young at the time but she was very mature and intelligent and that is more than I can say for the women who were in my college courses at the time.

1. Just get married at City hall, don't worry about a ceremony
2. Have an unoffical (i.e. non rental) marriage at the local park. Have a potluck lunch, have fun hanging out and shooting water guns at each other. I had a friend do this, it was cheap and a lot more fun than everyone having to be dressed up in some gloomy church and reception hall
3. Similar to above, but use an old nordic method of marriage. All it requires is one witness (priest or whomever is licensed to perform the wedding) a broom, some cord, and a sword on the ground. All you have to do is hold hands while being tied together and jump over the sword and broom together.
