I think the average is one month of severence for every year service, but it will vary.
Push for all you can get, and don't forget unused vacation. I believe they owe you for that too.
Good luck.

 what socialist nanny state do you live in? haha

If you're talking car insurance, go in and ask how much to pay for 6 months. When I got laid off it was a lot cheaper than month to month so I paid up front.

Might be a good idea, it might also take a big chunk of your unemployment though. Look into getting COBRA insurance if you both were relying on your work insurance before this. Otherwise if you are without insurance for a period of time it could cause her problems to be seen as pre-existing conditions with whatever insurance company your next job is using.

Oh and if you really do think you are getting laid off because of medical issues, get a lawyer before taking any severance, cause it does happen and you would be surprised what lawyers can dig up in the end resulting in a bigger settlement then the measly severance they were going to give you.

Before getting laid off do the following;
1: Start bring personal belongings home
2: steal what you can
3: get letters of recomendations
4: get your resume in order and start getting it out there
5: get home email address and phone numbers of key coworkers
6: get your finances in order
7: start interviewing
8: Recruiters can be helpful in the professional space

Then when it happens
1: if given a choice of lump sum payout or monthly payments take the lump sum
2: Immediatly file for unemployment
3: have fun & workout often

I think my supply of post-it notes , and reams of paper and highlighters , paperclips , staples , tape , folders and pens is stocked up plenty....this probably won't be needed.

Then you are thinking too small. Consider desks, chairs, doors, carpeting, plumbing fixtures, forklifts .......

Damn dude, I know what you're going through.

I was laid of back in '03 and didn't know until the day it happened, they laid off half my department at the same time due to downsizing :(

Use your advanced warning to your fullest advantage and try as hard as you can to get something asap (of course)

Good luck to you.

A lawyer needs to be seen if:

You are the only one getting laid off
You recently submitted paperwork to your company for your wife's medical issues

If you are the only one getting let go, then almost any jury would side with you in a civil case if you sued because of your wife's medical condition. However, if you have coworkers being let go as well, it would be harder to prove.

In either case, talk to a lawyer before you take any package as already said.

Don't know what you're going with but the PPO 5000 plan from Aetna is pretty nice. I started doing contract work this year and just signed up for it. Not sure if they'll have it where you live but I got it from eHealthInsurance:

http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/

Runs about $120 a month for two people and has excellent coverage considering everything. If you need material it jumps up to $400+.

There is a very good possibility that I will get laid off after 29 years, just one year from retirement.

I feel your pain.

Thanks man , if it weren't for that , I'd be totally freaking out. I really like my job. But to be honest , the only thing I'm worried about is being able to make sure that my wife is taken care of ya know. I have to keep health insurance for her sake with her going through the medical / health issues. I don't know what I would do if we had that to take care of too.
Oh , and Turnin , thank you for bringing that to my attention , I didn't even think about what would happen if I were to let health coverage lapse , and then try to get coverage for a pre existing condition.
I need a

Hey man, it's Turin not turn-in

stolen from http://healthinsurance.net

"All health plans in Kentucky must limit exclusion of pre-existing conditions. There are rules about what counts as a pre-existing condition and how long you must wait before a new health plan will begin to pay for care for that condition. Generally, if you join a new health plan, your old coverage will be credited toward the pre-existing condition exclusion period, provided you did not have a long break in coverage."

I looked up Kentucky, where I'm at since you dont have a profile telling us your address. The trick would be to find out what is considered a long break. And hey, if you're local, I'll buy you that beer.

And actually I live in Indiana.......Lafayette to be exact.

Too far north, and don't worry about it. Good luck looking for work.

Like others have said, it's nice that you at least have some notice, so you can figure out how you can do this before the money stops coming in. I'd probably take advantage of the time and call up my current insurance company and ask them all about pre existing conditions, get an idea of what timeframe you are looking at. If you have any chance of hospitilzations coming up, you need to ensure you're insured.

So far you've done it the smart way, you have money saved up for bills etc, The trick is now to start looking hard for a good job to move to. Get references lined up from your company, etc. As nice as the unemployment vacation may sound, it's best to start looking now. There's always the chance that it will take some time to find a job.

Good luck.

Do you think you'll have a problem finding work?

Talk to a rep from your current health ins. co., chances are they might have a plan you could convert to. When I gat the axe I had Kaiser HMO, and they have a one time, one year plan for peeps down on thier luck. It was about 30% of what I was paying while working.

I don't think anybody has mentioned it yet, but you can continue your existing medical/health coverage though a program called COBRA. It's much more expensive, since you're paying the entire cost of the medical coverage (rather than your employer picking up a portion).

Your existing policy would continue as it does today, you'd just be paying for 100% of it.

This may be worth looking into. However after sitting and thinking about things that were said to me yesterday. I think something shady is going on with my boss.
I have my boss , and then there is the General Manager of our operation. My boss gave me this timeframe. I only spoke to ONE person at work about what happened as she is the only person I really trust to keep it to herself , I didn't want this going around the office ya know. Well , she has a pretty good relationship with our general manager , and he came into her office last night and asked her to quote " so what did he think about what his boss told him?" Since I asked her to not say anything , so she played like she didn't know anything. And he told her ..... "He told him that he has 3 weeks to get this accomplished or he's out." he also said that my boss had given me a warning 10 days ago because I had taken 4 days off of work in the last month. (When I moved to this department a month ago , I told him that I would need time off because my wife was in and out of the hospital) And the warning said that with the time off that I've had I would almost have to be considered for part time status , which does not include the company health plan. And said that any more time off of work could leave me open to disciplinary action up to , and including termination.
Now yesterday he tells me that if I need any time off work for interviews to take it , and he would ok it...(verbal commitment I might add , no record of it). And he tells me that he would like me to tender my resignation rather than have to fire me.
My general manager supposedly thinks that there was some other reason for my warning 10 days ago. And my boss is supposed to furnish a copy of this warning to him today.
I'm thinking , I'm the highest paid member of my group. Boss can't just get me out now with no reason....he's expecting me to take time off of work for "interviews" like we verbally agreed , and then he's got all he needs to let me go , and not give me unemployment. Does that sound shady to anyone?

Sounds shady to me, if they don't lay you off then you can't collect unemployment. So doing your own letter of resignation will only help him and hurt you.

From what you just said there though, it sounds like if you get this project done on time then the General manager is expecting you to still be around where your direct boss is making it out like you've gotta go no matter what.

Seems conflicting.

But either way, sounds like a they're a bunch of a-holes for going about these things behind your back and to use you taking time off to tend to your sick wife that was in the hospital is really low IMO.

You'll be better off at another company that will treat you better IMO.
