i been setting up a lan to share a cable modem. between 3 systems one has xp pro the other ywo have windows 98se, using a smc router set to factory defaults. there is a problem where at least one system gets kicked off and the only way we know of to get back on is to turn the router off then back on. xp's event log showed a dhcp error. i told xp what ip adderess to use instead of getting one automatically. i used the ip address it had when it was online and it still gets kicked off but i didn't see any error's or warnings in the system log. i don't know what to check or what is causeing the problem. i tried a clean install of xp and the problem still happened. i used norton to check for any virus and it didn't find any.
is there some way to find out what the cause or at least find out what is not causing this, i feel i am going around in circles. the only system that can be changed is the xp system as it is mine and my room mates like their systems just the way the are. is it possible that one of their system is running something that is screwing things up or is there some new virus or worm out there causing this that norton can't detect

give the PCs static internal IPs.

and then disable DHCP server in the router.

Can you be more specific about the error you're getting.

i gave all the pc's static ip's turned off dhcp in the router and already udgraded the firmware,
now the system with xp is locking up every 10-15 minutes and has to be rebooted. there are no errors or warnings in the event log. i don't know if there is some network setting is wrong or something else. i didn't install or remove any software since i made the changes to the lan. does anyone have any ideas

take the xp machine off the network and see if it continues to lock up... maybe independent of the router
