Getting kicked out of Terminal Services in W2K??

Hey fellas, question for you.

I make use of terminal services (remote admin mode) on a 2000 Pro machine on the same lan as the Server, to do some off-base management. Thing is whenever I load TSClient from my laptop on a 802.11b connection, sometimes I get knocked off and TS closes up on me? When I re-login, I am shown the same place the last time I was on TS.

I don't have any special policy that I know of that would kill TS. Any ideas? Thx.

Network issues maybe? What type of wireless NIC are you using? Have you installed the latest drivers and updated the firmware? Also, I would check to make sure that in the Terminal Services Configuration MMC, that the setting END A DISCONNECT SESSION is not set. You can find it in the properties of the RDP-Tcp Connection, then click on the SESSIONS tab.

Just double checked, doesn't seem to be there. The TS configuration under MMC I never knew existed. Thx for pointing that out to me 🙂
I'm using the Wilinx PCMCIA wireless network card, along with the most up-to-date firmware and drivers.

BTW, if I use TS remotely in a public area, is the authentication secure? What method is used to secure authentication, and is it only authentication only or does it secure the entire communication session? Thx.

One last thing, you can run TS in remote or app mode. App mode requires licencing from MS? Anybody know the cost?

Thx.

The RDP protocol has builtin encryption. Since you are not in the US, you only have the ability to use 56-bit encryption. The encryption scheme does encrypt the entire session, from start to finish. I can't remember what RDP uses to created the mutual authentication, but I will let you know later after I look it up if you want.

Application mode should only be used if you want a lot of users connecting to the Terminal Server and running applications from one central place. If the only person is going to be you, then remote admin mode will work just fine.

The licensing for Terminal Server is not cheap. You will have to contact your local reseller for pricing as it will be different on the other side of the world. 🙂

lol, I'm in Canada. I don't know which side of the world you're on 😉 😛 hehe

Oh yeah, encrypting the entire session is good. I see that you can choose encryption level from low, to medium, to high too.
