Getting into shape -- is it supposed to hurt?

Nocturnal

Lifer
Ok I?m talking about an overweight male just starting out in an exercise class or with a personal trainer. Is the workout supposed to hurt? Not that much physically but more mentally as in not wanting to go back due to the intense workout that I just had to go through.

I just started training mixed martial arts. We do three minute circuits with one minute breaks. After hitting the focus mitts for three minutes straight (being out of shape) does it for me. I?m like ready to fall down and just die. I have to keep walking around so that I can lower my heart rate and calm myself. But it?s like man I don?t want to go back to class because of that feeling I get afterwards. I want to be in shape? Maybe I?m training at the wrong place or something. But I don?t know, I just it?s hard to explain? if you?re out of shape and go to a gym and exercise your heart out trying as hard as you can not to give up then you?ll know what I mean.

A lot of people will say that it doesn?t hurt but rather it feels good. Like a good pain; I guess you could say that, but then again I feel pain.

I know that I want to get into shape for many reasons. One being overweight and fat isn?t the funnest position to be in. Obviously being in shape you have a healthy body and you of course will have some kind of confidence and self-esteem. I, however, have none of what I just briefly mentioned.

So what do I do? I know I want to get into shape but I don?t know if I want to go at the pace I?m currently going at. I don?t want to push myself? I think I pushed myself so far already that I?ve discouraged myself.

What to do?

Yeah, stick with it. Its gonna suck, but usually not for long. Whenever I start a new workout somewhere for whatever reason, it sucks for about 2 weeks, and then results start and I get better.

more mentally as in not wanting to go back due to the intense workout that I just had to go through.

Oh, I'm so sorry...you are experienceing mental anguish over a little Tai Bo? That's tragic.

i know exactly how you feel, I started going to the gym in November, and after every workout, i felt like total crap, but I've lost 30lbs, and life feels much better for me

You worked hard at overeating and being lazy, so now you have to work hard at getting the weight off.

No one said workin out was easy, it IS hard. But if you stick with it, you will be happier (and healthier) in the end.

Stick with it, it gets easier and more enjoyable over time. If you quit now, you'll kick you @ss later on down the road. It's worth it, no pain no gain.

take it slow when you start. don't be like every noob out there that's pumped about working out for the first time, workout crazy hard for like aweek then quit.

basically don't try and overexert yourself when u start, you'll be doing that when you get more in shape

Yeah, everyone's agreeing, and I'll agree too:

The first day of my new jogging/HIIT sprinting routine I thought I was going to DIE. I couldnt understand how anyone does it. Then I did it again. And again. And now after a few weeks of doing it 4-5 times a week, WOW, I feel great while doing it and even better after doing it.

I started runnin 1mile evereyday starting summer, felt like real bad for 3 days but then it started to get better.

You just stressin your body too much like workout shock since it's been so long since u worked out last, it'll get better in a short time, but it'll still be a tough workout.

yeah, start lower and build up, its is much easier. also if you are jogging, go at a slower pace if you have to but try to at least hit your target, say 1 mile. i started at 1 mile a day and got to around 4 miles a day after a few months when I use to work out all the time.
