Getting into gaming...

Okay, wow... After initially only wanting to spend ~$700 for my new setup (P4D 805 2.66 @ 3.7ghz, 640gb SATA RAID, sonata II case), I had some trouble with my motherboard (Don't buy cheap motherboards, you'll regret it right off the bat) and had to get a replacement, but the only replacement newegg has for the Pentium D was with PCI-e.

I'm currently running an x850pro flashed to XT/PE but it's AGP, and bestbuy won't refund the $250 I spent on it. All they'll do is switch it out for an X1600pro PCI-e or a 7600, and that has nowhere near the power of my x850xt/pe. Sooooooo, I figure I might as well just keep the x850 and leave it in my old system since I paid for it and yeah.

My problem is this, I need to get a PCI-e card now for my new motherboard. I want as much or more power than i'm getting out of my x850xt/pe if I possibly can about the same price. I found this on newegg, and it seems to be a good performer. I'm not sure why it's going for so much less than other X1800XT cards are... But would this be the best way to go for the most performance for price? Would this outperform my X850XT/PE? Also, any other suggestions for a card in the $250 price range would be much appriciated. I wanna be able to play F.E.A.R lookin good on this sytem 🙂

Get it. Best card for your money, easy, and it will blow away your X850 XT PE.

i actually bought an OC'ed 7900gt at launch for $300 shipped. no regrets, awesome card. Every game is smooth as silk on max settings. well except for oblivion...damn you bethesda! seriously, that game will crush any system.

I lioke it, but it's not a pentium 4d, it's a new pentium, just pentium D.

If you have never gamed on a PC before, your better off spending some money on a Xbox 360 and a couple games for $200+ less then a new PC, and enjoy all your games nice and smooth without having to worry about if your system will run it, or having to upgrade once a year to get the new game that just came out.

Yeah I agree, I like pc gaming a lot more than playing on my 360, gamecube, or ps2, but I had the ps2 and gamecube before I got into pc gaming.

either a 7900GT or an X1800XT (both currently selling fast) will suit your needs very nicely. both sell for around $280 or so, and are weighted extremely evenly when considering pros vs cons. If you plan to overclock, the 7900GT would be your best bet, otherwise the X1800XT would be a better choice.
