I haven't really tried to do pushups since I was a kid.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I can't go down without hitting the ground.

Going up is no problem ;)

do pushups on your knees till you can do 1 regular. don't stop to lose the weight. once you can do them then loose more weight it will get easier.

Ok, I managed to do a few. I did 5 in one set, and between 1-4 for the other 6 or 7 sets.

I stopped when I couldn't lift myself up anymore. I'll be sore tomorrow ;)

Screw it, I start to get in shape before I went to Parris Island (10 years ago). Unless your overweight, it really doesn't do that much good. It would be pretty hard to actually prepare for what's really in store. Unless you can get someone to wake you up at 4:00am in the morning yelling and screaming and do it continuosly until the sun goes down. Yeah, go work on a farm or something. The mental part is tougher. The physical part, they'll stop just short of killing ya.

Well, I have to lose 20 lbs in 2 months regardless of how "impossible" it is. I don't think that it is. Today I did one lap around the block. Took me 29 mins :/ I ended up jogging about 1 mile and walking 1.3. prolly could have ran farther if I remembered to drink something beforehand... I've done 60 pushups and 60 situps so far today.

Food breakdown was 1880 cals
50g fat, 240g carb, 120g protein

Nothing new here, but keep cutting that fat down... Eat lots of steamed fresh veggies and raw protien lean meats.. i.e. chicken/turkey. Cut out all fried foods and things basted in butter or cheese. If you get a hankering for cheese, melt a slice of Kraft 2% over your veggies. Excuse my language here, but f*ck diets... if you want to seriously drop weight, healthy eating and exercise have to become a lifestyle, not a fad. I think that someone in here has already said this... but eat healthy for 20 of your meals in a week and treat yourself to what ever you want for that 21st meal (This assumes you eat 3 meals a day).

Good luck guys. I really commend you for dedicating yourselves to getting healthy... God knows it's a challenge in todays society.

Yet I ran.

Today was the last installment of week 1 of the Couch Potato-5K program. Thursday begins weeks 2. I was much less winded today. It was still pretty rough, but nothing like last week. I think that my lungs are starting to build capacity. I feel pretty good, but I'm tired. My legs are getting bigger. My diet getting more normal. Lots of protein and some fruit. Soups and salads are mainstays now.

I think I'm addicted.

PS I took this picture before I ran. Careful, it's 1800x1200. Enjoy.

Beautiful day for a run :) Conditions here in flat-ass Illinois are about the same. The rain stopped around 11 and I went running about 1:00. The wind was a pain in the butt, though. My entire return leg of my route was against 30+ MPH gusts.

Your lungs will get better still. Each new week will challenge you and your body. I kinda miss that now that I'm just doing 4 miles straight through.

But yeah, this is addicting. Just keep that addiction even after you get out of the military and you'll have a much healthier life. Once you hit your thirties, you really start to notice your body go down hill if you haven't kept up with your cardio and weight training. From 20 years old, you lose 1% of your muscle and gain 1% of fat every year if you don't exercise regularly. By 35 that's a 15% change ... compounded yearly, and it shows. Keep up with this plan and you'll avoid all that.

Remember to get some fresh/steamed/grilled veggies in your diet every chance you get. And instead of soups (most of them have sodium levels that would kill a cow) go for the turkey/chicken/tuna/ lean ham sandwich. :)

Amused... Where are you located at in IL? I'm in Peoria and the weather has sucked for most of the past week. I've been running (10mi, 5 times a week) outside since early spring and because of our horrid weather, just yesterday I had to resort to renewing my membership at the health club, so I can go spend 60 min on a treadmill... Granted now that I'm back going to the health club I'm also using the pool and other facilities, but If I had my choice I'd do my run outside and strength train at home. I despise treadmills... oh well... 5 more months & I'll be back to running outside.

BTW... great job with all the advice your giving these guys! Spot on.

Waking up at 4am is *no* problem. I work crazy hours, that's easy. The yelling part will be sort of tough, but I expect it. I'm getting myself mentally prepared, the physical part will be bad. I don't want to be recycled, and I don't want to do "just good enough". I want to go there and blow them away.

I had to go back through the thread to figure out what branch you were going into. I believe I figured out it's the Air Force. If that's the case, you just need to practice picking up a briefcase and setting it down. :D

I'm in Champaign. Yeah, it has been cold, but since I pulled a muscle in my neck I'm able to do my run around noon, instead of early in the morning (I used to lift at noon). So it's a bit warmer by then. The rain hasn't been too bad here. Just a couple of half days this week and one rained out day last week.

I was hoping to get back to lifting this week, but no dice. The pull actually feels worse this week than last week. I'm starting to get worried and I feel like I'm already losing mass. :(

If you knew what kind of weather I had to PT in while I was in the Army, you'd know why this weather doesn't bother me all that much :) I'll run in anything over 10 degrees so long as there's no ice on the ground and it's dry. I'll run in anything over 50 degrees so long as it's not stormy. I get by with layering clothes (fleece rocks), sport thermal underwear, and if need be, Gore-tex outerwear. My GF says I look like I'm going to hold up a mini market with the ski mask I wear when it's below freezing. :)

Oh, and this weather is great for is cool downs. No walking around sweating like a pig after the run. I strip to my t-shirt and do my stretches outside and by the time I'm done, I'm cooled off. :)

Yeah, I hate treadmills with a passion. I'll end up on one if this winter gets too cold or we have a lot of snow. The GF's mom has one wasting away in her Garage. I might have to go pick it up. Or I can go run at Gold's where I do my weight training.

10 miles a day? 5 days a week? Man, I wish I could do that. :p

Yep, It's been a good year for me... I peaked at 7 mile runs last year and early this spring I set my goal at 10, and was there by mid-may. What has worked best for me is carrying a solid pace for all my run and then pushing myself to the limit on the last mile.

I think this winter I'm going to look at mixing my routine up a little bit... rather than 10mi x 5days, go to 12mi x 3days and 8mi x 2days (at a faster pace). My goal next year is 26mi (Marathon) in 3hrs or less.

I admire you for sticking with it in the cold. Man, I just can't do it. Anything below 40 degrees and my muscles start to cramp after 5 or so miles. 55 to 65, that's the weather I love.

The cold isn't that bad. You just gotta know how to dress for it. Go buy some lightweight thermal underwear made for skiers and lots of fleece. :) If the air you're breathing is too cold for your lungs, buy a ski mask or wear a gaiter. And some fleece gloves work great when it's not windy, otherwise ski gloves. The key is to make yourself warm enough to begin sweating after a couple of miles. If you buy the right underwear and fleece, it wicks your sweat away from your body. This means no natural fibers.

Go get some good thermal underwear. The very lightweight synthetic kind used for skiing. Then get some fleece pants, a pullover and gloves to go with it. Don't buy or use cotton for active use. It soaks up the sweat and keeps it close to your skin. The synthetic underwear and fleece will wick the sweat away from your skin.

I did my run today while it was 40 degrees and gusty wind. I was sweating like a dog when I got done.

I'm still a bit confused about the diet thing.

When I'm hungry, should I eat, or should I not so that I can burn fat?

You should plan how you're going to accomplish your desired caloric (protein/fat/carb) intake and stick with your 'planned' meals. Its ok to include snacks, as long as they're permissable snacks according to your 'plan'.

I snack. But I snack on fruit. If I need a bigger snack I make myself a turkey sandwich. If you don't eat when you're hungry, you'll binge later. So you might as well eat when you are hungry, and eat a lot of small snack like meals a day rather than two or three big meals. That cuts the binging down.

Also, don't eat until you're stuffed.

Let me ask you this: before you started all this, was your weight staying constant? If so, don't cut back on your calories too much, because it's the running that's going to burn fat.

when you can carry a 100lb backpack and jog for at least 30 mins without becoming tired, youre about ready. You won't be able to fully prepare yourself though, they intentionally push you beyond what is a healthy level of exertion. The two biggest things to remember, don't whine, and don't be last.

Oh yeah. I conceed that people are eating more. However, the foods in their diet have changed very little in the past 30 years... and that was pretty much my point. I guess less time doing physical labor means more time to sit on one's ass and eat.

But my real point was that blaming high fat, refined sugars and starch and so forth really misses the mark. We ate that same crap throughout the 70s and didn't gain much if any weight per capita. What did change is the lack of activity, and (conceeding to your point) serving sizes.

I fail to see the point in trying to get ready for boot camp. The purpose of boot camp is to whip you into shape. Give it a rest.

Yep, that's about it. They break you down, and build you back up. Still, it will help a HELL of a lot to lose any excess fat now, and build youre cardio up to 45 minutes of running (or 4-5 miles).

This is the Air Force. I thought that's where the sissy, nancy-boy whiners went? :p
