Getting hardware from companies

My boss is going away for a bit and has put me and a few other guys in charge in getting stuff to write about. Anyone have any experience in this category? Our site serves a couple million hits a month and has been around for about three years. I live in the Bay Area where several of these companies are based, so I have the phone to contact them instead of just e-mail without having to worry about getting a big ol' phone bill. So how should I approach such a deed?
