Question Getting frame drops in Diablo, do I need to upgrade?

Hi all,

I am running a triple monitor setup with a 5800x and RTX 3080, and 32GB of RAM. I just formatted my PC recently, and my gaming SSD is a SN850, my boot drive is a Sabrent Rocket 1TB.

I've never gotten the frames other folks have in games like COD Warzone or a few others, but primarily I play COD Warzone and now Diablo 4. With Diablo I've been getting frame drops and cutouts while playing. I play at 1440, but as I mentioned, I have a triple monitor setup (only one monitor for gaming, other two are work/web browsing).

Appreciate any thoughts... not sure if I need an upgrade or not, as I'm on a fresh format and the latest drivers. I can't figure what might be wrong.

Thanks!

I wouldn’t think you should with a 3080. What settings are you running at and does the issue persist if you change any of those around?

I had the same problem with my living room PC with Diablo in particular. 10GB RTX 3080 connected to a 4K 120Hz TV. Frame drops and stutter fests in towns primarily. Even with DLSS Balanced.
Dropped in a 7900 XTX and now Diablo IV runs fine without any upscaling. So make of that what you will.

As for the other games well I can't be sure. Verify that your CPU isn't throttling. It is easy for a CPU cooler to be mounted incorrectly.

Could it be internet or Blizzard server related? I know they were, and are still, doing a lot of updates and maintenance on the Diablo servers.

That's a possibility too. But I had to disable high resolution textures to get consistent performance out of the RTX 3080 in D4. So try lowering settings too.

The high res textures seem the most likely culprit given the 10 GB VRAM and the way the problem has been described. Those might be based around an assumption 12-16 GB and less than that is going to have spikes when it has to go out to main memory.

Any way to monitor the VRAM usage while in game and have it alert me? Because I'm on 10GB VRAM so figure that may be the issue.

Programs like MSI Afterburner will let you monitor stuff like that and can display an overlay of the performance and other metrics while gaming. Though I think those just show allocation, not necessarily current usage. If it's trying to allocate over 10 GB that could still indicate an issue.

I haven't played the release version yet, planning to get started at the end of summer. I did play both public betas though, and I can tell you that even then performance varied a lot from system to system, and that was on top of the issues the game had on the server side. I used a 12700K & 6800XT, both plenty for 1440p, and the game varied between buttery smooth and the occasional stutter and/or rubber-banding. The second beta was much better, indicating some of the issues were client/server related, as my system config was the same.

That being said, looking at %1 lows in the retail version, it's obvious that some Nvidia cards are having issues with the game. One could be tempted to think it's a VRAM issue, but you can see the RTX 3090 is struggling just as bad as the 3080. The AMD cards, especially the higher end ones, are punching way above their weight. The game needs better optimization, and will likely receive performance updates in the future.

My suggestion for you would be to first focus on community knowledge about in-game settings that help performance. In other words, try to tweak the game first. One example is the video bellow, which already indicates something that is worth trying to improve some stuttering issues (disable Social > Cross-Network Play):

Diablo 4 net code is crap, I would not upgrade anytime soon, you have an ingame latency meter hit CTR-R twice, one is for FPS other shows msec. Other games no changes I am getting like 35-60 msec on game lobby. But D4 doubles that, getting 78-90 average.

Also if you follow D4 forums people are all posting stutter, lag spikes with no real solution. Area loading is a big deal, ride your horse around to different zones you get lag spikes, or if you teleport to different zone still the same.

Some say close bnet client I do that but still have same problems, I run at medium despite what they say should be fine for high settings. Game like to eat Nvidia cards especially the 30xx series. So be warned, it will tax your card, if you have a Gigabyte card be especially warned.

I run a 12600kf, with dedicated nvme game drive which should be direct storage ready meaning it has no compression but still get stutter on loading area. I run a RX6600 8gb card, will not upgrade for this game despite wanting a newer card. Until they fix the loading stutter or implement a proper direct storage solution I would just accept that this game run poo, poo.

OP, have you tried playing with just the games to see how performance is? And same with multiple monitors. See how that affects performance. Could be a tipoff to something you might need to change.

Also check things like power plans, etc, computer might be trying to conserve energy.

I would play on lower setting and see if you still get the shuttering issues described.
Then you can rule out GPU.

I know my cousin ran into RAM issues.
He was topped at 95% ram used when playing the game with all the other stuff he had in background.
We doubled his ram, and ram usage went to 60% at most, and it fixed a lot of shuttering.
Then he brought his PC over to my house where i have ATT fiber, and bnet is hosted by ATT so it cleared up a lot more.

Came to the conclusion it was both ram + latency that was the issue.

Netcode in town is particularly bad. That's where people warp in and out all the time. I can theorize that our computers are loading character assets and it's not being done in an elegant manner.

My girlfriend and I have been putting massive amounts of hours in Diablo IV. My system is a 5800X3D + 3090 @ 4K and hers is a 5800X + 3060 @ 1440p.

Outside of town the only GFX issues we might have is server lag / rubber banding and it isn't often.

The thing most alarming to me is that my CPU has reached 94.5C playing the game while only being approx. 25-30% utilized, and it does it time and again.

So no, I don't think you need to upgrade. I think Blizzard needs to fix their game.

I don't know why there is such a discrepancy in performance in this game. For me, this game has been nearly flawless. Sure, there is the occasional network glitch, but I expect that in any always-online game, unfortunately. I'm lucky enough to be on the west coast, so I'm closer to the Blizzard servers than those on the other side of the continent, so that may help.

My PC runs the game great. I recently upgraded it, but running a 12700k and 3090 with 32GB ram, the game ran without hitching or crashing. Running @1440p with everything set to Ultra. I limit the framerate to 144 just to save some energy since I don't notice a difference between that and 165. Oddly enough, when I upgraded to a 4090, the game began stuttering. However, a re-install of the graphics driver fixed that. No overheating, no out of memory errors, no crashing. Not sure what is going on with your computers.
