they are very strict on servers i hear though

been hearing a lot of that too...didn't know if it was legit

That was one of the really cool things about Qwest DSL: No blocked ports. 20/21/25/80 all open.

My DL was comparitively slow (1.5MB/s) but the upload was 1MB/s. Came in mighty handy for uh..."selectively sharing stuff." 😀

So what equipment is needed for FIOS? Do you still have a regular modem? One that accepts fiber in the back instead of coax or a phone line?

We've had fiber for about a year as well, 10Mbps. It's sweet! I was at my Dad's place last week and he has Comcast. I made him green with envy when I showed how fast I could run a download😀

Anyway, its up and running and it is really blazing. Sites load almost instantly. getting more than 3MB from verizon newsgroups 😀

Got my Fios installed today. I just went with the base package for now. They always increase speeds later for teh same price tho (once it's been out for a while).

$30/month after my $5 package discount
5mbps down, 2mbps up
1-yr contract
1st month free

Contractors were here 2 times last week to mark/paint where they were burying the lines. Then today the actual VZ techs were here installing everything. They said this was the first order in my neighborhood/development, as such, there was 4 of them here.

But it has passed the pr0n test with flying colors!! 😛

Can someone clear me up on this - once the fiber optic is ran to your house, what type of cable is ran INSIDE your house? Still fiber optic? Then do you need a modem that takes a fiber optic cable in the back?

What is the thingy. Is there no modem?

Wow...the fastest you can get up here in SW ontario is 14MPBS for consumer lines...which I've got for 35 bucks a month.

Hurray for employee discounts.

i hate you. I live in a FIOS roll out county... but no where near a neighbor they will go to anytime soon 🙁

All I really want is something cheaper than cable and better than DSL.. since DSL sucks where I live. It'd be nice to have the upstream for VOIP too.

i talked to someone who works at cox... he says not to use FIOS especially if you use hd... hd takes 15mbps per channel... cablevision just announced they were upgrading their top tier to like 45mbps..

Does FIOS have the same drawback as Cable in such that the more people in the neighborhood who use it, the slower it gets?

It's fiber. a city of 50,000 could run though a bundle the size of a BIC Pen and still get 30 down 5 up. A single fibre (one strand) can carry about 100 Tb of data in less than 10 picomiter diameter.

Holy Fvck! Think I can get it in Washington DC come October?

Huh? Fiber is the real deal. Once you've got fiber, your speed is only limited by what your ISP will allow.

We've got 10MB fiber at work. We could have 300MB tomorrow if we wanted to pay.

Looks like it's available in a few towns near me in NH, so hopefully soon I'll be able to get it. I've actually got an extremely dependable cable connection through Adelphia @ 6mb/1mb, but they rape me since I'm not using their cable...$65/mo. If you get FIOS, is it like DSL where they make you have a phone land line through them as well? I've been a happy Vonage customer for a couple years and I have no interest in getting a landline again since the lines up here are terrible.
