Getting fios installed tomorrow. Why so long???

So, TWC has raped me for the last time. Going fios will cut my monthly bill in half. Me, I live in NYC and they said it will take 4-6 hours. Why so freaking long? It is not fiber all the way thru as my GF has fios and they just reused her RCN cable. So, why, in a NYC apt, will this take so freaking long???????

Thats probably true. Well, my apt is small and I am a bachelor so its a mess. I will just clear a path and play my guitar offensively. That should rush em.

The TOA is 8am-12pm. They said the install will take 4-6 hours.

Pretty sure my install took about 3-4 hours. also in NYC. all of the network was pre-run so he didn't even have to do that.

if you don't have an ONT, he'll have to install that.

- Get tools/cables/connetors/etc from truck
- [buffer time for cases where they need something else and have to go get it]
- Install ONT, test connection
- Call office, provide customer data, wait for activation
- Install router, configure
- Install set-top boxes on each TV, test
- Allow lots of time for configuring PCs (because they have no idea how much you know)
- [buffer time for when it doesn't work immediately and they have to deal with the office]
- Explain some stuff to the customer
- Cleanup, sign paperwork

They give a 4-6 hour window as a worst-case situation. That way when it only takes 3 hours, you're happy.

I currently have cable, but interested in fios. Problem is though that my cable junction box is outside so I don't really have a good place for the ON.

You usually don't have to worry about it. The company does a good job of setting you up.

Me being in a larger co-op the ON is somewhere in the basement or something like that. So, in essence, I am NOT going to have a full fios setup as I am sure the optics are not in my apt. My GF said and I confirmed, they reused her coax cable from her prior rcn setup.

I will miss TWC tho. In the 8 years I had them I never had an outage or blip. I will miss their start-over system where if i missed a show and if it was still on I can restart it from the beginning without any DVR. I will also miss NY1, best news channel in the city. I will also miss their large guide menu. My GFs fios menu screen is slow and small and horrid. Even tho my tv is 50" I am sure my bad eyes will be squinting at the fios menu. Most of all I will miss my sleek, black, shiny samsung cable box. That thing is beautiful. The fios box is fugly and bulky.

man, if i wasnt saving 90 buck a month I wouldnt switch!

Was just looking through a couple fios threads, and noticed they now have an adapter that you can plug into your tv, via the cable line I'm assuming, so you can watch all the channels without needing a box. Now you still have to rent the damn things, but for less than half of what a box fee would be, sounding like one of the last main hurdles of cable being better may be gone.

Looks like they would install the ont outside the house against the siding. Was curious about the battery backup, but since I wouldn't use the phone service, don't think they'd try to install one anyway.

For the internet portion, how is the ont connected to the modem/router?

Did find out that those small tv adapters are SD only and have doubled in price, so now real deal there.

The ONT and battery installed in my apt. Its connected via coax cable to the router. So far so good.

Yeah, going from my cable 25/5 to fios 75/?, is about 5-10 cheaper without considering contract discounts, but I may lose most of that in additional equipment required.

Of course this is also comparing the top tier tv service on fios that gives me red zone and showtime/skinemax while not getting those on cable. If they still had the free for life dvr offer I'd probably still be much closer to switching.

Wish I could have afforded to stay with TWC. Fios is good and all but I really hate verizon. I deal with them at work and they are so stupid and big that any issues I will have they will take forever. Plus all the damn equipment that i have to pay for (electricity-wise). UPS, ONT, bigass router. With TWC is was just their tiny modem/router. I may pull off their UPS as I dont care if the phone dies or not.
