Getting exact driving mileages for a custom route

if you really want software, get MS Mappoint

... Perhaps I should be a little more clear. I'm not lost. I want to be able to specify my OWN ROADS. All that does is give me the exact same directions as Google, Yahoo, and so on and so forth.

I want to be able to evaluate several different routes of my own design against one another.

this is what i do in the mappoint. make a stop on the route you want to go.

microsoft streets and trips is like a neutered version of mappoint (also much cheaper if you buy it), and you can plan your own route in it as well

Streets and Trips is a good consumer level mapping program. It's cheap and easy to use. I use it for mapping motorcyle trips all the time. It's not 100% accurate but I'm satisfied with the results.

I use Streets and Trips all the time. It will suggest a route, or you can specify areas that you want to avoid and it will recompute a new route. If you want to choose routes, you add "stops" of zero duration on the roads you want to use and it will recompute your route to include those. It will also give you mileage and drive time.

It also will display (if you want) items of interest like hotels, restaurants, etc. along the route and you can search for items of interest within a radius you choose.

It will periodically download road construction info and tell you if your route includes any such areas.

I think it's well worth the few bucks.

I like MS Streets and Trips because of the "Avoid Area" option. That generally allows me to see different routes properly. Perfect for the DC area... 🙂

Some sites let you set intermediate destinations which you can use to try to force the route to go a certain way.

I use street atlas. It automatically gives quickest, shortest, and preferred routes. Plus, if there is a road you want to test on your own, you can mark it as a via, and it'll force the software to give you a route going through that area.

its called look at the globe sheesh

Think about what you just said. And if that doesn't help, go grab your globe and tell me how many miles it is from Parkton, MD to Newark, DE using I-83 to I-695 to I-95.

get a map and a ruler. That will get you pretty close mileages... and for exact... yeah, thats called your odometer. How did people drive before software?
