That strikes me as more of a problem with human nature, not a problem with religion.

I dislike certain aspects of religion, I dislike the way some people twist religion in order to get something they want, but religion itself is too big to distill down into one thing that you can simply like or dislike. Religious beliefs have resulted in countless good things and countless bad things happening.

It is absolutely a problem with human nature. We don't trust ourselves so we create laws to govern us. Religion for many is just politics, which is why this works in Islamic countries. Religion is stronger because instead of something just being illegal, it's a sin. People care about the law more when it relates to God instead of some abstract government they don't interact with in any way.

You are right that beliefs can help others do good, but laws bind people.

Man, for the first time in my life this sounds like a good idea. My sister went to Vegas on Monday with the douchebag she met four months ago and now she's screwed her life over royally.

If you lived your life ENTIRELY by that book, you'd likely be in jail (or dead).

When people say they live by the bible, they really mean they make the shit up as they go. They engage in creative interpretation that would make a lawyer blush.

Yeah I don't agree with the saying either, the bible itself is not some life instruction manual. It's part old law, part history, part song, part personal letters, etc.

I'll take a little of this chapter, a few verses from here, half of this book, and voila - I live by the book!

living by EVERYTHING it says in the bible is stupid. but the 10 commandments are a good guide. There are some good stories to help guide people. but there are also some stupid shit in it too.
