Getting DirecTV, use my ReplayTV with it, or get a DirecTV with Tivo?

I'm moving soon to a new apartment that finally faces the right direction for me to get DirecTV. I currently have a ReplayTV 5040 (has the commercial skip) hooked to my cable box. I'm debating on either keeping the ReplayTV and using it with the DirecTV, or selling it, and just getting ReplayTV with Tivo. Which is the better option?

Get the Tivo from DTV. 2 tuners is fuggin' awesome. Are you paying a monthly fee for Replay? If so the Tivo fee for DTV is cheaper, $5 a month.

Yea, I pay $9.95 per month for ReplayTV. I forgot about the two tuners, that would be nice. I guess the only feature better with the ReplayTV I have is the commercial skip, which isn't much.

Get the tivo.

You'll miss the User Interface of your replay, but overall the integrated dual tuner setup is still better.

There's a sequence of buttons you can push to enable a 30 sec. skip feature on the Tivo. I haven't tried this personally.

I have used 4 DVR's so far

ReplayTV 3060 (4 years old came with FREE unlimited programming guides, no broadband connection)
ReplayTV 5040, ultimate geek/hackers dream come true with commercial advance
Tivo series 2, got it because it was free AR and wife prefers the Tivo interface
DirecTivo, BEST of them all in terms of features, recording quality (100% digital baby), price, etc.

You can activate 30sec skip on the DirecTIVO so you aren't losing it completely.

If you get a DTV receiver with the serial port, then that's not a problem anymore.

I have 2 RTVs as well and I would agree with the others. You should get a DirecTivo. I've used a DTV receiver with my 3030 and it worked great via the serial port. (When I used the IR, channel changes were as bad as royaldank said.) However, you'll get more positives going with with the DirecTivo.

Make sure you try out the DirecTivo for a while before selling the 5040 (if you decide to sell it). They don't sell that model anymore and if you find that you hate the DirecTivo enough to go back, you'll still have it.

Finally, if you do sell it, PM me. I might want to buy it. :D

How much do you think a mint ReplayTV 5040 with remote (original box/manual) would go for?

Get the DirecTivo! Those things kick ass! I have one right now, and am planning on buying another for the bedroom!

Use both until you decide, but I personally prefer tivo by far. Then again, I don't do a lot of the major hacking stuff other than expanded hard drive (which I didn't do with the DTV one).

With or without lifetime service?

Without.

Well.....current ebay prices are about $170, but they still have a day or more to go, so they will probably go for quite a bit more. Stock HD?

What about the DirecTivo do you like more than the Replay? (Besides Dual Tuner/Straight MPEG2 record) I am just curious. I  my 5040. I think that I would miss commercial advance too much to switch to something else. I love not having to press anything to get through the commercials.

Plus, it was quite possibly the best deal I have ever scored. Bought two of them at Radio Shack for $150 each (w/Lifetime Service) when the "Lifetime Service" fiasco happened last year. Kept one and sold the other on ebay for $350. :D (I know, I'm a bastard). Every time I pick up the remote I think, "Free ReplayTV and $50 in my pocket!"

Edit: Spelling

The dual tuners and straight MPEG2 record are the huge plusses. Plus, it's one integrated component versus two that have to communicate with each other. Also, he already said that he's paying $10/mo for it. If you're paying for dvr service, you might as well pay $5 less. He just has to get over the change in features/UI.

Like you, I already had a lifetime sub. So, I preferred to keep it. However, it was very tempting to get the DirectTivo when it had dropped to $99 (at that time, it was a great deal).

DirecTiVo is the best (TV) invention since the VCR. Hell, it's even better than that! :)

If you feel like it, you can hack the Directivo, I just upgraded mint to 120+ hours of recording time from 40:D

The dual tuners is a massive plus too...
