I have a WD 750 GB which has failed. It isn't detected at all, and I tried it on different computers. Freezing failed. Backup I had is fubared. Such is life.

I'm assuming some circuit has failed which prevents accessing the data on the platter.

Is there any way to repair or salvage the platters in order to recover the data?

You can try it yourself, but it may be a futile attempt. Get the exact same HDD, and swap logic boards.

otherwise pay a company like ontrack hundreds/thousands to recover it.

How important is the information to you?

Why everyone suggests a professional data recovery company is because anything you try doing on your own to recover the data can make it worse. By "worse" I mean less data recoverable even by a pro, or higher cost.

I would follow Zap's recommendation and use a data recovery company.

If you swap circuit boards, try to also swap BIOS chips since each drive is adjusted individually for seeks and head write current. This chips is typically an 8-pin surface mount part, but check part numbers since some common voltage regulator chips use the same package type.
