Getting Data off Computer for Upgrade

Hi, I'm planning on upgrading my computer within the next two weeks and I'm planning on getting one of the 74 GB WD Raptors. The problem is how I should go about getting needed data off my Raid Array to put in my new computer.

I have two Maxtor 80 GB drives in a Raid 0. That Raid 0 is then partitioned into 4 areas: System, Programs, Music, and Data. I'm going to need to get all of the files in Music and Data over to my new computer's HD setup (the raptor for OS and applications, and 1 of the Maxtor's for data, no RAID). After AT and StorageReview's article on RAID, plus situations like this, I've become disenchanted with RAID and don't plan to use it anymore.

Is there a way to deconstruct the RAID with the given configuration and store those files on one of the maxtor's to then easily plug into the new system? Or will I need another hard drive to put those files on? The files are about 72 GB in total that I need to transfer.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks,
Chad

There's not usually an easy way (or any way) to 'unstripe' a RAID configuration. You'll need to back up your data onto other media, either DVDs, tape, or another hard disk...

That's what I thought. Gonna have to find a spare hdd that can fit since I don't have a DV-R. What a pain. =p

if it fits, ghost the 72gb u got into the 74 gb raptor
split the maxtors up to data drive, are you aiming for 2 seperate drives ?

move each of the new partition to your newly split maxtor drive and than reformat the raptor and reinstall OS

Right now I have 2 of the maxtor's. In the new computer, I'm going to use 1 of the maxtor's with the raptor. No raid obviously. I guess I could do that. I'm also setting up another computer for the family and have a 120 gig installed in there computer although it needs to be reformated anyway, so I might just unscrew that one from the case and use that in the interrum.

If you're on a network you could dump all the important stuff onto a PC with lots of free space, then pull it back onto the new drive later when the new PC is ready.

You could even hook up a new drive to another PC on the network so the files can go right to their final destination.

Your idea of using the 120Gb on the interim until you can reconstruct your storage system with the Raptor is probably the most viable and most reliable.
