Getting Chinese (or Japanese) symbol tattoos. Got a question.

Does anyone know where one could find a site (or something like that) that could display the caligraphy for certain phrases or individual words? I want to get, "For My Daughter" or something like that as a tat, but of course I don't want to get the wrong symbols.

The last thing I need is a tat that says, "Chicken is happy". :D

Especially when it's not in your native tongue and you have no idea what the symbols mean.

Seriously dude, don't do it. I can almost promise you you'll hate it later. The Chinese lettering thing is just a trend. And a bad one at that. I have one tattoo myself and am searching for a second design I like so it's not that I don't like tats. I'm sure a lot of other people will tell you the same thing. Take their advice.

I have plenty of tats as it is. It's just another one to add to my body.

If y'all don't think that is a good idea, what suggestions might you all have? I would like to do something for my daughter.

I was 50/50 on it as is. But I want some ink, just not quite sure what.

haha. Yeah, maybe when she turns 18. I think 5 is a little young to be inked.

I don't HAVE to have it, but I promised this girl that when we go to Vegas that if she gets her navel pierced I will get another tat. So now I am trying to figure out what to get. I don't want anything huge (that's for my left arm, it's halfway to being a tribal sleeve).

Get her favorite cartoon character, or a sparrow/swallow in the color of her birth stone, or a dove with a banner containing her name/birthdate.

Haha, no, I promised a girlfriend of mine......I don't think my daughter would have much fun in Vegas.

Ink is NOT for fools. I would say that ink isn't for everyone, but it is just an art form to express yourself.

I am neither Asian nor American Indian, so the thought of me getting Asian or tribal characters tattooed strikes me as really lame.

I have kanji on my back but it's because IT'S MY MIDDLE NAME. (ei = honor)

Don't be one of those toolbags that gets ink in another language that you don't understand.

Just get it in English with a really classy font.

Haha, you guys are hilarious!!

Aight, no symbols of crap I don't understand. I don't think I would ever regret it but I could probably come up with something a little more unique.

I am Alaskan Native....I could get something that deals with that.

I was thinking about getting her name, "Gavin" in some sort of cool font. I think I would pass on the Olde English though.

Why are you getting a tat in Kanji? Obviously the language/culture isn't your own... or you'd already know it. I'm not trying to belittle your tat, but if you want something that personal tat'd onto you in the first place, why not use a language that you're closer to?

Crimzon- that's a good point. Personally, it isn't a "culture" thing to me. I have always thought that the Japanese/Chinese languages were beautiful. Just thought it may be an interesting idea. But obviously, if so many people here are disagreeing with that then it may indeed be a bad idea.

Know what? If you like the idea and you think that you will like it down the road when Kanji is still around but not "trendy" like the present - then go for it.

You aren't doing tats for all the loudmouths :D here. You're doing it for yourself. Who cares if you're not Asian.

I'm Chinese background myself and i've been thinking of doing Chinese lettering or "Kanji" of my family name and my two sons on my delts or on my pecs. I've been thinking of the family name for a long, long time before this current trend. Maybe one of these days. When it comes I won't be worrying what others think.

When I've moved out I'd like to think more seriously about getting my name tattoed on my upper back inbetween my shoulder blades and on or a bit lower my traps.

Khmer/ Chinese.

Koing <-what I would get done. Means light in Chinese but not spelt this way...
