Getting burrs off a dog

My mother's little mini-German Schnauzer (sic?) managed to get away from her while she was walking him, and now has a bunch (about 100 all told I would guess) of burrs stuck in his fur around his head and chest. Somehow, this has become my problem. His hair looks a little shorter than 2 inches. Should I find a narrow metal comb and try to remove them that way? Or just give him an extremely amateur haircut with some clippers? Pulling them by hand is simply not working, either for me or the dog.

Next time throw him in the shower and keep him wet for awhile, maybe do a couple passes with dog shampoo. Those things will eventually get waterlogged and soften to the point where you can comb them out easier. I've heard mineral oil helps, but that sounds iffy to me. Might require a patient dog, but at least you won't have to mangle him with scissors and cause your mom any grief.


Better yet, tell your mom "Your dog, your problem."

get one of those little metal grooming combs that look like a pincushion - our lab/cocker mix gets into that crap all the time and that type of comb worked really well getting them all out.

also, the mineral oil trick does work, but it's a bitch to get the dog clean again...
