Getting an Android phone on att... worth it?

I can upgrade my existing phone in about two months and right now after reading up on the upcoming/current android phones for At&T I am not really too sure.

I don't think I want to buy an Iphone 4s because it is 199$ for the cheapest and the upgrades aren't that significant (Correct if I am wrong please) and most of the android selections on AT&T are not as good as compared to Verizon.

Most of the Android phones on AT&T are 99$ and that is the same price as the IPhone 4.

Should I just get the Iphone 4 or a 99$ android phone? The samsung SII cost about the same as the Iphone 4s so that is really not an option for me right now.

What do you guys think?

Also which OS has better support for apps? Say from popular media sites/games like Facebook, twitter, tumblr.. etc,

Not to confuse you and throw another option into the mix or anything, but if you want a solid AT&T phone for cheap up front costs, the Samsung Focus is a penny on Amazon.

I haven't had issues with either for Apps. Android if you're keen on having stuff more open.. like opening documents from SD Cards, attaching documents from other applications..

I would honestly say you may want to wait until Nexus phone/Ice Cream Sandwich is out to decide, that way you'll have a better handle on iOS5 vs ICS to make a decision.

Samsung Focus is a great phone.. currently using one. I am loving WP7 🙂, but I don't think he was looking at WP7 as an option

Yea I have two months before I switched phones so I guess I can use that time to see if the Ice Cream Sandwich will best iOS 5 or not.

It just seems to be a waste getting an Android phone on AT&T because people kept telling AT&T users they are lucky because they have a subsidized Iphone.

Best Buy has the Atrix, Nexus S and Infuse 4g all for $50 on At&t. Any one of those would be a great choice although I would be tempted to get the Nexus S with ICS coming out in the near future.

No offence, but if you can't afford an extra $100 for the phone now how are you comfortable with almost $100/month for 2 years..?

Considering this I don't see any reason to get last gen to save a (comparatively) measly $100 when you'll pay over $2,000 over the contract, and you're stuck with that phone for 2 years.

I don't know why people continue to bring this up as a point. If you're going to have a smartphone, the contract is a fact of life. Its also over the course of years, its not $2000 up front. So if money is tight, and you've budgeted for the service plan, who is to say you can (or want) to drop an extra $100+ on the device itself?

That doesn't really make sense - you can get a subsidized iPhone on Verizon, too. If you want an iPhone, get an iPhone. If you want something else in your price range, get something else. Neither is "better" no matter what fanboys try to tell you, it really depends on what you want out of a phone.

So....what DO you want?

Well I want a fast OS. A high quality Camera for taking pics and also a front facing Camera if I want to Skype or videochat. A phone good for games.
Strong specs like strong processor so everything runs smoothly, Strong Battery life.

I guess that is it.

SGSII and iPhone fit that bill. However, both are outside of your set price unles you get a 8GB iphone 4? I think that's $99 now. I think.

Yup should be.. no reason it shouldn't be because Iphone 4 8 GB at 199$ will completely not sell when IPhone 4s comes out.

I think I might just set down 199$ for Iphone 4s. I have to wait to read some of the reviews on it.

Some things I heard about iOS 5 is the Imessage and it seems really interesting.. Seems like BBM.

Does Android have something similiar?

Get hands on first. Ff you never tried a platform before, read reviews later, make sure you like the OS first.

That being said, the fastest smartphone out right now is the same one that excels at everything you listed, the iphone 4S. For $199 and without an established preferred platfom, iphone 4S is the best bang for the buck.

There are multiple free text or text alternatives for both phones. Most people use GV which is true text messages for free. It has ups and downs, the up is it works with anyone on any system via their normal text messaing.

Well my point is that if you have to think long and hard about $100 it seems like maybe you shouldn't commit to $80-100 an month for a toy. There are certainly cheaper plans that will take care of your basic communication needs then, and you can also afford to, you know feed your children or whatever.

If you are spending that money, I think it's much better to save up a few months (if like you said you budget money for the plan anyway that should work out..) and get the latest gen device, since you're stuck with it for 2 years. Buying last gen subsidized phones I think is a bad decision

And I don't know why people continue to bring *this* inaccurate statement.

Sure, it needs a little effort, but it's not impossible. I haven't had a contract in many years (at least 7) and I always carry a smartphone with me, even from before people know what a smartphone is (i.e. pre-iPhone days).

Sorry, poor wording. I didn't mean contract. I meant the monthly plan. The fact that you have to pay a bill for voice & data.

It just seems to be iMessage is better implicated and it is much easier for people to text each other for free without some third party app.

What are the downs btw?

Samsclub has the Samsung SGS2 for $148 on contract. They currently also have the 16gb iPhone 4 for $99 till they run out of stock.

gtalk on android is the same thing as their iMessage thing, im sure. the main thing keeping me from getting an ip4/4s is the screen size. mebbe im just spoiled by my droidX, but ive gotten so used to the 4.3" screen i feel like im constantly squinting when im helping my friends with their ip4 stuff.

"Getting an Android phone on att... worth it? "

The part of the question that hits me first is ATT. With respect to that, my response is "No!" Reason? ATT barely has 3G coverage at my location. It depends on where you live and will use the phone.

As for all the alternative phones, etc., that is really another question, and it has been answered in spades.

Where you live and use the phone... exactly. In my case, AT&T is the *only* carrier that has coverage at my house.
