Getting a speeding ticket in Canada but I'm a US Citizen

I was coming back from Toronto towards Michigan and I get caught for speeding about 20 minutes away from the bridge. I was clocked at going 130km/hr in a 100km/hr zone. I was going about 80mph.

The cop gives me a ticket and writes down 120km/hr in a 100km/hr zone and tells me the ticket fee is 100 bucks and lets me go.

Will this ticket show up on my record if I hold a Michigan license and will my insurance ever find out about this? I will probably end up paying because it is only 100 Canadian and I go to Canada often enough that I don't want any extra hassles.

I know my friend got one on the US and he is CDN...if you dont pay and get caught for any violation, its off to the slammer you go....with a bar of soap

my parents got a ticket in canada about 20 years ago and never paid. they haven't had any issues.

but i live in michigan, and wouldnt be surpised if they had some sort of deal with canada since so many people commute from detroit to windsor.

well I'll probably end up paying sometime this week but does anyone know if my insurance will find out about this ticket?

i heard that if i get a ticket outside of my home state, my insurance doesn't find out

I got 3 speeding tickets in Italy (all over 60km over the limit), and 2 in swiss that I never paid. Its been 5 years now and nothing has come of it. Never had one in canada though, so not sure what their policy is on sharing and enforcing speed related violations.

You can get away with this with interstate travel sometimes, I wouldn't be surprised if the Canadians never catch up to you. But you'll likely have a warrant out for you in Canada

What will happen? If you do not pay, your car will be listed in Canada as having not paid a ticket, and next time you get pulled over in Canada your car could be impounded. You would likely have a warrant issued for your arrest. If they ran you at the border when you cross, you could be arrested or denied entry. Once you are denied entry, its permanently on the database at the border.... one of the usual questions they ask is if you've even been denied entry... Its essentially the same as with Canadian cars in the US.... I've gotten parking tickets there and never paid... As long as I dont get other ones, nothing will happen. So, if you travel to Canada often, I would pay it.... but if you don't then don't bother.

$100 CAD is like $.20 US. Just send them a blank envelope because the postage to ship it costs more than the ticket.

You have to pay since you have a Michigan license. It is the same as getting a ticket in Michigan.

Careful... radar detectors are illegal in some provinces

I believe some Canadian provinces and US states close to the border have arrangements so that tickets not paid in one country will eventually get back to the other.

I guess its just about how much you want to tempt fate.

Jesus just pay the ticket! You broke their laws, you don't contest that, so just pay it.

the funny thing is that i had a radar detector and it never went off the whole fricken time. i know i was speeding because i had my car in cruise control because it was a pretty empty highway.

i guess i'll just pay the 100 bucks and get over with it.

now how do i send a 100 dollar canadian check? should i just write them a check for 80 bucks USD?

And you have at least 10 min if you are pulled over to put it away. I'd rather have the detector than get pulled over for speeding.

just get a canadian money order from a bank.... shouldn't be a problem. they would likely frown on a US CHEQUE <as they are spelled in Canada>

Nah, just round it up to a quarter and tell them to keep the change.
