getting a PSP today!

I?m going to Costco after work to pick up a PSP. I?m so excited. I also ordered the 2gb memstick duo from amazon. What are the chances of getting a 2.0 firmware these days? Or are all the new units 2.5? I?m mainly looking to use it for web browsing, and playing movies, snes emulator and lastly mp3s. anybody know if it?ll run FF3(us version) and chrono trigger reasonably well? This is assuming I can find a unit that can run the emulators of course.

Also, does it play mp4 videos out of the box? I thought I read somewhere that I need to buy something else to make it play videos.

thanks

I bought one in early January and it was 2.01. A workaround still exists for that but it requires GTA:LCS, so its not as easy as before.

g/l getting a firmware that will allow you to play emulated games.

download pspvideo9 to convert any video file to the PSP format and transfer them, it's very easy to use.

both chrono trigger and FF3 run perfectly on my 1.5 PSP

ive been out of the loop is 1.5 still the only rev that can do home brew or has something for 2.0 come out?

BTW i love my PSP..i hope you like yours

2.0 can be downgraded to 1.5 now

and I use it sporadically, one week a lot, then unused for for another

hm...if i buy from costco, i have basically a lifetime warranty on the unit. but i'll go check out your thread now.

you'll quickly realize how much acutal PSP games suck and really only use it for watching divx and playing emulators.

If I didn't travel each and every week for business, I'd never use my PSP. I only use it when waiting at the airport, or on the plane itself.

I hear laptops are pretty awesome for that. 😛

Laptops are 3x the money, and don't fit in your pocket...

I do all that with my Axim, and much much more... 🙂

If you plan to do a lot of browsing on it you'll be sorely disappointed. It's slow at rendering pages, no true WPA-PSK support (though it lists it as an option), text entry is a pain in a fanny.

the emulators rock, and of course being able to load any game onto the memory stick..... it's a cool little device, but yeah, i dont play the regualr games all that much

Full size keyboard, better battery life (compared to pocket pcs) and easy to carry around in a backpack or briefcase. I really don't understand why anyone would want to browse the web on anything smaller than a 10" screen. My main point is just that I believe gaming handhelds and consoles should be primarily for games. I think too many people are buying into the hype of the PSP because of the features it has and then realizing that on a day to day basis they are nothing more than a gimmick. I'm excepting the people who commute to and from work on a train or something like that, then there is reason enough to get a PSP just for the movie aspect.

I have owned a PSP and have since sold it due to the lack of games and the horrible response time of the LCD that was very annoying. The screen is gorgeous though.

i think you may be right. i'll see if my inspiron 6000 can do that. that'll be killer!

I had a PSP. I played the hell out of Tiger Woods '06. After that, I downloaded a sh1t load of iso's and played a few here and there. Never listened to music, never watched vids on it. It was a 1.5 f/w, so no web surfing. I then started playing SNES roms, mainly Zelda: Link to the Past and Super Metroid.

Then it sat for almost two weeks, untouched. So I got rid of it. I too had a 2gb mem stick for it.

Oh and it hardly "fits in your pocket". It did that....in my cargo pants.

I think the person who said it's a gimmick....is right. The novelty wears off quickly.
