Getting a new monitor.. LCD or CRT?!?!?!!!! 22" vs 17"

Ok so i'm looking at the Mitsubishi Diamatron 22" monitor and the Samsung 770 LCD.. Both around $1,000... Question is - what should i get? I don't have a DVI compatible video card so i'd need to get a new vid card (which i really don't wanna do)... The Diamatron is farkin sweet as is! But it's HUGE..

What would you do?

It depends on whether you're a student (and move a lot) and also whether you have the desk space.

If you have a house, or are otherwise settled, and have enough desk space, get the largest CRT you can afford. You can never have too much screen space.

If you move every year or so, and/or if your desk is scroungey, you pretty much need to get an LCD. You can't easily transport a CRT larger than 17''.

do you game a lot ? That Samsung LCD is sweet but I'd go with that Mitsubishi Diamatron if you do a lot of gaming.
Eirther way, congrats on having to make such a tough choice 🙂

<< If the 22" LCD is too huge, why don't you get a smaller flat CRT instead? A 19" tube can be had for ~300. >>

I do a lot of print work / web design and now video production. I can't be working with such a small space, and a 19" for under $300 more then likely isn't going to give me accurate colors that i need.

I'm pretty much settled down - not a lot of moving.. I've already got a Sony Trinitron 19" - i'll be using this one for a "Pallette" monitor..

Transition,

I highly recommend the Samsung 170T 17 inch LCD screen.
It has DVI as well, high contrast and good luminesance (sp?)

It can be had for 805 shipped.

Only disadvantage to LCD is you really can't crank up the resolution.
I used to have 21 inch Nokia 445X pro and would run 1600x1200x32 @ 85Hz.

I now have (2) Samsung 170T's and I run 1280x1024x32 @ 75 Hz.

One warning: Once you go LCD, there is no turning back 🙂

the Samsung and Mitsubishi are about the same price.. I mean it's 22" vs. 17"... I don't find the LCD's that appealing compared to the Mitsubishi,... Anyone else have anything convincing for me to goto an LCD screen?

LCD's have absolutely nothing going for them except portability and the "cool" factor.

CRT's have less ghosting, richer color, support more resolutions, no "dead pixel" problems, are cheaper, and you can sit your printer on top! Try doing that with the LCD! NOT!

doh, I thought I had my post posted.... but lets try this again

22" not the 17", if you wanted a 17" get a CRT for 150 trinitron, flat screened 🙂

even better, get a 21" , save 500 dollars

I think that was about it

Well LCD's do have some advantages...

They use 1/3 of the power CRT's do....
Twice as bright....

But on the other hand you have...

Twice as expensive
Dead pixel potential

Screw it... Hello Mitsubishi, goodbye Samsung! 🙂

<< You can easily get a 21'' CRT for around $500. Why would you pay twice that for an extra inch? >>

Quality, Quality, Quality. Mitsu CRT's are very highly regarded in professional photo and video editing work.

if you've got 1000 to blow on a moniter, I would definatly get a lcd... but I would look around before I would get that samsung. Personally I went with a dell branded (I believe it is a planar lcd though) 17" for about 700 bucks and I love it. I know that sony makes some lcd's with super high refresh rates, as well as viewsonic. Definatly spend some time looking around before buying, making sure you get the most bang for your buck.

if you can't work with 19", what makes you think that you can work with 17" LCD?
