Getting a new IP

I logged into the router and did a release/renew. This didn't work. WHat else can I do to get a new IP via cable modem?

unplug all of it for 5minutes

have a beer, laugh with friends, etc.

come back. plug everything in. if it still doesn't work, unplug everything and plug in your pc directly to the cable modem

tell us if you stil lcan't get an ip

Been ip-banned from somewhere? 😛

It's really up to your isp. If they have a system that tries to give the same ip back every time (maybe by an identifier in the cable modem? I've got no clue about cable networking) then there's not much you can do short of asking them to change it. If it were totally randomized, you would have gotten a new one by now. I get a new one every time my router goes down which is a pain because I have to manually update my dyndns 😕

The addresses are issued based on MAC address (aka "Burned-In Address," "Hardware Address," Ethernet Address" and others)

The address is issued for the duration of a "lease time;" Until the least expires or until you have a new MAC address (i.e., new router, different host) you will continue to get that IP address.

I've had the same cable address for years, though my DSL address changes a couple times a week. It's up to the ISP (as mentioned) some give long-term leases, some are pretty short (to reduce the number of folks trying to set up servers).

Most people *like* having the same address for a long time.

Good Luck

We set our DSL pppoe IP leases to be 24 hours for the exact reason scottmac said -- to prevent anybody from putting up a server. Some persistent customers get 12 hour leases. However, if your DSL doesn't go down and they don't have an aggressive lease policy (aka lets client attempt to retain the same IP) you'll have the same IP for ages.

I know I've had mine for a few months now. However, I think when I had asked for a speed boost temporarily for a LAN it changed(i dunno the reasoning behind this), but when I had it set back to normal speeds, i got my same old one back. It's nice to have the same IP(of course, unless you get IP banned from somewhere...hahahah)

Trying to find a universal rule is ?silly?.

Time Warner RR, the IP changes every few weeks does not matter how much time you switch Off (even for days). If you try a different MAC is does not change the IP, it just would not work cause the MAC is the PW. The same IP stays for the duration period!

Verizon DSL, every time you when you switch the Modem Off it gets a new IP. Does Not matter if the IP was obtained/leased 10 min. ago, if you switch off for 1 min. and then switch On the IP is new.

Would it be like this on Verizon, and or RR across the USA?

Probably Not, but that is the way it works in the NYC area.
