But the ultimate point A to B car is the Jetta TDI, 1000 km per tank of diesel cannot be beat, and the NA versions can be flashed to perform like a eurospec boosting HP to 135. My dads friend has one modified, it has quite a kick and pulls on the highway like an animal :)

I agree with you.
But the Corolla is about $75k SGD. It would be almost 700$ a month for 10 years....

I thought most people take public transportation in Singapore?

Will the Lancer last for 10 years?

Why buy a new car if it's so expensive and your choices are so limited?
Can't you find a better deal on a second hand car?

I will never understand why people buy brand new cars when you can get 1 or 2 year old second hand cars for a fair whack cheaper, or even older ones for a lot less. Financially it doesn't make too much sense. (Unless its a company car and so you get effectively a big discount)

no kidding

maybe instead of a new cheap mtsubishi...you could buy a decent used car that doesnt suck? maybe not even spend 10 farking years paying on it? jesus,i know a girl with a 5 year lease on a xB and *thats* too long, in my opinion.

it bad enough that its a cheap mistubishi, but to pay fo 10 years on that damn thing is ridiculous. theres got to be some kind of used car market over there, look into it. or get a bike.

yeah really, unless you are rich, buying brand new cars is a waste of money (especially if that car is a pos Lancer). you can buy a crappy $15,000 Lancer brand new, or a 3 year old Honda Accord that will be bigger, safer, nicer, better performing, more reliable, and arguably better looking. but it doesn't have that new car smell. i guess you could argue for the warranty, but you could find a used car for $1,000 less than a new Lancer and put that money in reserve for eventual maintenance.

I wouldn't do it, it's just a nromal sedan pretty much, why Mitsubishi?

Cos my budget is 60k SGD, which works out to about 500$ a month on a 10 year loan (at 3% interest).

At 60k, over here, that can get me a Kia Cerato, various Hyundai models, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Sunny (think its called Sentra in the US?)....

I would not blow 35kUSD on a mitsubishi....

When I got my auto loan 2 years ago, Capital One Auto Finance SPECIFICALLY excluded loans from the following auto makers: Mitsubishi, Kia, Oldsmobile, and a few others.

Obviously the "stamina" of those vehicles wasn't matching the life of the loan.

I've had good experience with Nissan, and I've heard very good comments from Hyundai owners I know.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I heard rumors that Mitsubishi might be going under?

You realize your going to be paying $60,000 in 10 years for a car that isn't worth $20,000 right now.

Do some more homework and get a 1-2 year old econobox like everyone else in your country.

Yeah... I thought so too. Daewoo and Suzuki were the other two. The EVO would be the only Mitsu I'd risk my money on.

Buy a PROTON. A Waja is pretty good. Support your neighbor country!

Get a bicycle or walk. Giving a chick a ride on your bicycle is totally romantic, given you don't roll-over.

Okay, it's pretty obvious most of us don't know a thing about the car market in Singapore. It is obviously not like the market in the US, because we pay around $15k for Lancers, Corollas, Sentras, etc., but in Singapore a Lancer/Sentra go for $35k and a Corolla goes for over $42k.

Out of the choices you've given us, I would choose between the Sentra and the Lancer. To be honest, I don't think one is more reliable than the other. The Lancer platform is actually very sound, and the car is very popular in Asia because of it. A lot of uninformed people here will tell you that Mitsubishi only makes crap cars, but the truth is actually a bit muddled. Some of their models have always been crap, some were great and now are crap, some have not been around long enough to decide, and some have always been great.

About two years back while car shopping, I test drove Lancers, Civics, Corollas, Sentras, Hyundais. I like the Corolla the best in terms of quality and looks; the Civic was next; I liked the Lancers looks but the interior was a little sparse, and the same could be said for the Sentra although its looks were less desirable; the Hyundai looked goofy, but the interior was on par with the Lancer and Sentra. Engine/Drivetrain-wise, the Corolla was the quickest/smoothest, the Civic was a close second, and the Lancer/Sentra were third. I thought the Lancer was a little peppier than both the Sentra and Hyundai.

With the Lancer or Sentra, you're not going to get a very eye-popping interior, but I think both cars are soundly constructed. And the Lancer has been around in Singapore for much longer than it has in the US, so you are probably more qualified to decide if the car has been reliable or not.
