Getting a laptop... money vs. quality?

I'm trying to decide between a Dell 700m or a ASUS Z33a..

What do you guys suggest I get? Dell quality is a concern... Is the ASUS worth the extra money? It does have Sonoma and 533fsb, whereas Dell is still using the Dothan.

I want to still be able to use this when I take it on my round the world trip last next year... Do Dell or ASUS provide international warranties?

i wanted an Asus portable too but the price was ridiculous...i got the 700m, 1.7 extended + regular battery, 2 year warranty, upgraded ram to 1.2g and all of it was about $1000

Similarly configured Dell after all the crazy coupons will be around 1000 bucks, whereas the ASUS would be around 1400 bucks (at 1toppc.com)...

We use Dell laptops at work, and my Latitude D600 from last november had to be replaced already. I'm worried that the laptop will break down when I'm overseas and be without anyway to edit my blog/photos or worse lose my pictures!

omg not your precious blog :Q

(EDIT: read what maddox has to say bout bloggers..or just search for the thread i posted on his comments 😉)

😉

get the dell, just get it well before hand to iron out any problems...

Haha... I'll be doing something similar to www.m-why.com... it's more for personal reasons where I can look back on it years from now and still be able to remember the little details of the adventure you know?

Yeah... maybe I'll bite the bullet next time the "750 off 1500" comes along...the build quality still worries me though since I'll be putting it in some kind of sleeve and just throw it in my backpack for a year

Dell currently has 45% off coupon with a nice 3 year warranty.

I love my 700m, especially with the 8 cell battery almost 5 hours battery life.

Looking for an ultraportable... 3-4lbs and 12" screen

Rossman: how durable is the 700m? Does it feel solid? Do you recommend getting the 3 yr warranty? I almost pulled the trigger last night, but I heard bad things about Dell support. Also, are the warranties worldwide? If I'm in Thailand, will they still fix it?

Build quality is definitely better than the 600m (which I have also owned). The 12.1" WXGA screen is bright and beautiful.

The current 45% Dell coupon is good if you want a loaded system with 3 year warranty. I'm not sure if it covers you worldwide or not.

I work at a place where we use nothing but Dell for desktops and laptops. In the last year we have had to have every hard drive and motherboard replaced in 1600 Optiplex desktops because they were failing at a very high rate. We have a high number of D600 and D800 laptops that have had motherboard or video replaced more than once. Don't even get me started on their switches. Oh we also had to have 50+ Poweredge 1650 servers have their motherboards replaced because they kept catching on fire.

Dell's QC is total crap. Spend the money and get the Asus. My personal laptop is a Fujitsu P2010, you couldn't pay me to buy a Dell.

Any recommendations for laptops that are around $1000-$1500?

Need these features:
~12" screen
5+hour battery life (w/ extended battery)
CDRW drive
80gb HD
512mb+ RAM
Good quality (build, reliability)

What's wrong w/ ASUS? I've heard nothing but good things. What model did you get?

Rossman: I've been to notebookforums.com, but I just wanted to see what AT'ers think 🙂 I trust this forum more than any other source on tech stuff on the web

IBM rocks but try to find a loaded X with warranty for around $1,000

Won't happen.

Remember there were some dead spots on my dell's LCD a while back (when it was still under warranty)...they sent a tech out to my door to replace it. All over just emails with tech support....never had to call 'em.
