Getting a kitten. Any pros or cons on either sex?

My wife has been a cat owner all her life. She insists that male cats have a better demeanor and are more friendly, less seclusive than females. That being said, she is strongly against having female cats.

All three of our cats are males and with the exception of the first, were rescues when they were very young. The first was a "return" to the Humane Society. I guess he was too weird for the first owners :p

Females are generally smaller, too. Our two boys are fat and sassy, the youngest is the runt (fully grown).

Adopt a shelter kitten + spay or neuter. Ask the shelter what they'd recommend for a breed as far as temperment based on your desires. :)

I'd agree with this.

That and cats will just be weird. I've been hanging out alot at my SO's house, and after he brought his cats there they changed their attitude alot. The female got alot more friendly with people(like she'll jump up on your shoulders and nuzzle against you) and the male constantly tries to escape(he's not neutered, and there's a decent local cat population so he tries to get out).

The male is much more obidient though. He'll come when called(most of the time), and is still very friendly.

I just read that as "He'll call home most of the time..."

I adopted 2 a year ago;
1. A female classic tabby. She's super-friendly, to the point of being high-maintenance, sleeps with me, "talks" alot, loves petting and tummy rubs. Found as part of an abandoned litter (no mom) near a sewer drain.
2. Black and white male- Shy, doesn't like to be touched, keeps to himself, more curious than the other cat, MUCH more skittish. Likes getting under things (blankets and whatnot). Born in the shelter where his mom was rescued to before his birth.

My previous female tabby was also supper-affectionate/high maitenance, with my other 2 males being only slightly less friendly.

I'd say it's a crapshot either way.

+1

We have a male and a female. Our female is VERY high maintenance and doesn't like to be bothered. The male loves attention though but he is skiddish around strangers.

Eh....

I'd rather have females. Pretty much all of the ones I've had growing up were females. Only 2 males. The females have always been really good cats and had good temperments.

I think it's more of a breed thing. But all our cats were spayed/neutered though too.

In my experience, males have a better disposition. They are calmer and more affectionate. This is a general statement though and no guarantee that you will get male who is loving. If he is not spayed, chances are he will spray in your house. Spaying a male is cheaper and easier than a female.

And if there are ppl home a lot, then one cat is fine. He is he gonna be alone most of the time, then perhaps getting two cats is something to consider. Playmates and bonding.

Remember, too, that a lot of what a cat becomes is going to be their temperament as a kitten (affectionate, spastic, etc), AND the behavior that you teach/allow in your household. My male cat is VERY affectionate with me, but pretty much can't stand any other guys (my friends come over, and he's ready for battle.....he seems to think that other males are fun to beat up on, and I wonder if it isn't his way of trying to determine the pecking order of the house). With women, he's mostly a lovey-dovey, and will rub and purr, if they let him.

What's funny is that he also has some really weird habits. Like most cats, he loves to chase a "jinglebell-ball" when thrown. Unlike most I've ever seen, he'll bring it back, and wait for you to throw it again (sorta like a dog). His dietary habits are stranger than any other cat I've ever seen.......he loves tuna (yeah, big surprise!), but snubs salmon (no biggy, more for me! LOL). He'll do small amounts of yogurt, ice cream (but no "strange" flavors like vanilla......I eat black cherry chocolate chunk, and he'll just about lick the bowl clean after I'm done with it), Spaghetti-Oh's with meatballs sauce (no other varieties, and no generic spaghetti-ohs), and he'll nibble on the occasional cookie. But the weirdest thing he likes the flavor of is kosher dill pickles!! Put a piece of one of those down, and he'll just about lick it to death, tho for the life of me I can't figure out what he likes about them! :)

Oh yeah, and males will also spray, after about a year of age, if they're not fixed. That's the kindest thing you can do for your cats, unless you have plans to breed them (purebreds). You'll get some dirty looks from a male cat after the surgery, if you're a guy, but he'll get over it! LOL

I say, let a kitten choose you, which ever cat comes to you. Choose that one. I have had cats all my life as well. Male and female, neither sex is better than the other.

I have 3 females and one male, all are affection to me, one female head butts me all the time. 2 blacks one, the oldest female likes to clean the male, the youngest. All in the cat themselves, how they will be.

If you do get a female, don't wait too long to get her spayed.

My experience has been that male cats are less mischievious, less tempermental, and a lot friendlier than females.

I always went by the rule - cats = male - dogs = female

(I have 3 cats - 2 male - 1 female (the female is a huge PITA)
Will be gettign a female dog within the next month or 2.

If you have any other animals I would recommend getting the cat spayed(unless you are just into that sort of thing, watching a dog try to mate with a cat is rather odd), just had our female spayed, she didn't like heat at all. I've always been a dog person but I have to admit that cats own. I wouldn't have known this animal lived with us most of the time if it wasn't for her heat sessions, I don't like animals that are high maintenance, but that's just me.

Male cats are more aggresive and will tend to spray more than females even when neutered.
