Getting a job as a bank teller -- how hard is it?

Has anyone here ever worked as a bank teller? From the outside it looks like a decent job for someone to do while looking for a career job. How hard is it to obtain a job as a teller and do those positions generally pay decently (over $10/hour)?

I work 2nd Level Help Desk support for a major bank.

You DON'T want to be a teller...trust me!!

Their pay is horrible...plus most of them are way out there. I hate talking to them, it's like talking to a wall.

3rd lvl network support here, I hate talking to 2nd lvl people, but 1st lvl help desk is worse. ;)

All problem tickets stop here thou, I can't pass it to anyone else if it is our issue.

My Mom was a bank teller for 25 years. She HATED it. She just didn't like working with the public. And the pay is bad (alhtough maybe better in a bigger city.)

I took a job right out of college 8 years ago making $9/hour. Mom had been working at the bank at that point for 20 years and she said I was already making more than her.:Q

The pay isn't much above minimum wage, to start. I work with a lot of banks, handling their employee benefits, so I see salaries for every employee my clients hire. Altho, if you're male, you'll start with a higher salary than if you're female. Judging from their reading comprehension skills, the job requirements are very low, so it shouldn't be difficult to get said job, if you really want it. There tends to be a lot of turnover for these jobs.

What the hell?

I'm a branch manager and have hired several tellers. We don't pay under $10 an hour. That isn't bad at all plus it gets your foot in the door to move up. You have to start somewhere.

I'd say it's good experience and a good part time job.

If you interview ask them if SELLING BANK PRODUCTS will be part of your job? Most likely it will.

You don't just cash checks and sit around all day. It's a lot more involved than that.

Wow. Low pay for people who handle money and have to wear decent clothes? Like MrMaster said, I'd always figured that working at a bank would pay at least $10/hour--how else would the bank be able to hire the kinds of employees it would want to present to the public? How else would it feel confident that it was hiring trustworthy employees?

Would my having a couple college degrees help me obtain a position above that of a frontline teller?

I'm a programmer... I hate talking to 3rd, 2nd or 1st level support. :)

Actually 3rd level is right next door, and are programmers as well. They're not that bad. The rest of you though... geez...

I applied fo a teller job with BofA during high school. so, back in 97, they were paying over $10 an hour, there was a technical interview where you had to count money, process deposits and withdraws and stuff, and customer service. I failed the money counting part =(

teller jobs here pay at least 10/hr. but the job would still suck. i would hate to have to deal with customers all day for that kind of pay though.
i'm wasn't hired as help desk but since i'm the only computer savy one in my area i end up fielding all kinds of lvl1 help desk problems. it gets annoying.

I was a bank teller for a while and I can say that it isn't that bad. Good hours, bankers hours, all holidays off.

For a time I was a large deposit teller, worked nights and no customers, we just counted money all night :D It was an OK job, people were fun to work with, driving was good since it was nighttime, pay was decent, etc.
