A friend of mine has a VAIO - unfortunately, without AGP and the Intel graphics are awful. She needs a dual videocard on the cheap, without gaming in mind, but rather doing video and graphics projects. No need for a capture solution, just a decent card that looks good - basically something under $60 since they all pretty much look the same nowadays...

1) @ newegg, we've come down to either a Radeon 9000 64mb for $55 or a Chaintech GeForce4 MX440-8x 64mb for $54, both PCI, offering DVI, VGA and s-video. Which would be the better solution? I haven't bought anything ATI since the stone ages...

2) Why is the Chaintech listed as 8x? Isn't that in reference to AGP slots? Will this work ok on her computer? Its an i845GL chipset.

If there is absolutely no difference, we'll probably pick up the ATI since its fanless.

Crappy DX8 support vs. crappy DX7 support? I vote ATI. :)
Though, I don't really understand what's wrong w/ the onboard in this situation...

The onboard viedo has a conflict with Adobe Premiere Pro, and of course there's a need for dual VGA-outs - thx for the reply.

Makes sense though for picking the Radeon - I didn't know that the GF4MX didn't support DX8+.

What about a Geforce FX 5200 for ~$75? Looks like the comparable board at this price would be a Radeon 9200SE. I'm assuming in this case the geforce would be the better buy considering DX9 vs DX8?

You really only need to pay attention about DX9 if you are gaming, and if you are buying a PCI card I doubt you are lol. I would stick with the ATI for price and they 5200 isn't mujch faster if at all. DX9 support is really just a waste with it.
