Getting a cell phone... what kind?

This will be my first cell phone, so what exactly am I looking for when I go to get one?

I've heard Nokia is pretty good. Any specific models I should look for, or stay away from? I'd like to be able to play games and read email as well, but that is not a big concern :)

Choose what provider fits your needs/has good service, then worry about the phone.

But I like the Nokia 33xx series, or the new Motorolas.

Nokia 82** series. They're the most durable and it's in the right zone where they're not too big, nor too expensive now. Don't get the 33** series. They're too heavy and lack the features to make it a great phone. Who needs a composer when you can download ringtones straight to your phone without all the hassle of pressing buttons to make one. :)

I do not like Nokia's because of their high radiation output. I like Motorola's. I love my Motorola StarTAC.

Depends on what you're going to use the cell for... if you're like me, and you just use it for emergencies and don't really care about styles... then just go w/ the free Nokia 5xxx they'll work just as well... you lose a few features here and there, and it won't necessarily be the lightest or the thinnest one out there, but it'll do if you just need one for the sake of emergencies

If you're out there for the style... I'd go for the 82xx that Mztycal mentioned... they're nice, not as small as the 6xxx - a little sturdier, and very sleek...

Just figure out which phone would be good for you, and just keep in mind that it doesn't really matter, a phone is used to make PHONE CALLS , not to front anyways - you'll just have more enemies that way ;)

I finally found the kind of cell I wanted (Nokia 7100 series). It was the kind that had a sliding panel on it like in the Matrix. Anyway, I found the model number and went to a Cingular store and they told me it was discontinued!! Oh my god!

If I'm wrong, please tell me so I can go to a store that doesn't have an idiot for a salesperson.

The 61** series is the same as the 51**. The 7*** series is bigger than the 82** and the 8860 is bigger than the 82** series. I don't know what 6*** series phone you're talking about, but nothing right now is as small as the 82** series. Nothing in Nokia's line-up anyway.

Eek, I meant the 82xx were the smallest... might I add, the lightest cell phone out there, weighs in at 2.8 ounces or something to that extent... I'd stay away from this "girly" phone, tch.

I like my Nokia 8290. It fits in my pocket so I don't look like a pretentious jerk.

I can only laugh at those self important types who carry two phones and a pager on their belt.

I second that!

Speaking of cell phones ... my current phone company (Cingular) has changed their service plan ($2.95/mo.more)and is offering me the chance to opt out of the contract. So I am wondering if I should just stay with Cingular or go with another provider. I want to stay with a local plan, and spend no more then $50 a month. How is the reception for other providers? What about customer service? Any comments are welcome.

Ericcsons put out the most I believe. Stay away from the 61xx series - I have one now and like my friend's (who has a different provider) this phone has some problems. The 82xx is fine as far as I know. For Sprint go with the new Samsung SPH-n200 (or something along those lines - really small and a nice phone - I'm about to get one)

I have been impressed with my StarTac. My son has a nice looking Samsung 8500, but the hinge looks weak (maybe not, he's had it > than a month).

it really depends on your area - i get a deal on Sprint service (25% off), but the reception and coverage of Verizon is alot better around here, however its not worth an extra $10 a month to me.

sugadaddy is right, you need to pick a provider first because some phones work better with different providers. around here alltel is our major provider, and if you use a nokia, then you will not be happy with the service, but use the same nokia and have att as your provider and you can't beat it.

I have a free mitsubishi that I got from att, and it works well for everything I want it to do, go to the store and check things out, don't be like a stupid little teeny bopper and get a cell phone that looks cool then have terrible service.
