Getting a 7800 GT, but with a slow CPU. Bad idea?

ok, i finally saved up some money to buy a new PC. but i really want the 7800 GT so i had to cut some corners with other parts. like a crap case and also a slower cpu, the AMD 64 3000 (1.8). now i have been told that its stupid to have a fast GPU if your CPU cant run it. so if i did get the 3000 just how slow would the 7800 GT run? would there be a huge change or not much at all, compared to a faster cpu?
if so, what CPU would you sagest? maybe the 3800? if that?s true i guess i better keep savin.

I recommend getting the 3000+ with a good motherboard, then overclocking to 2.5-2.6GHz. That's the cheapest option. And trust me, if you get a Athlon 64 Venice, it is a very strong guarantee of such overclockability.

yeah, its rather pointless to pair it with a slower cpu, think of it this way, your car requires alot of fuel in the cylinders, but your pump doesnt get enough to the thing, meaning it wont go as fast as i could. id say upgrade your cpu first, what kinda video card are you running?

You can use high resolutions to break away from the CPU bottleneck, you can also OC it, Venices generally OC very well.

if i remember the benchmarks, cpu speeds/ fps on the gtx plateaued at 2.2 (ie the fps increase/clockspeed increase was fairly small after that point), however a 3000+ is still quite a powerful gaming cpu and with the gt, your got nothing to worry about, at higher resolutions, cpu limitations become less

If its a venice 3000+ Venice Core overclock it as high as possible. 2.4Ghz is about the worst you could get. They just plainly overclockable. Just make sure it isn't a clawhammer. Look for this SKU ADA3000BPBOX (PIB (Processor In a Box)) or ADA3000DAA4BP (OEM)

NOT THIS ONE!!! AMA3000BEX5AR (This is a Mobile Clawhammer. Its based off of 130nm technology and doesn't overclock as well.

But in all honestly you dont have to overclock. Processors just aren't really limited with games yet unless you look at physics heavy game (Half Life 2). I know for a fact that one segment when a huge bridge crashes makes my 2.533Ghz 533FSB P4 crawl to a halt. But then again, a Venice 3000+ would run cricles around my system. Just get a 3000+ and a Thermalright XP120 heatsink. Then get this fan http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/de12tfexhisp.html

Ha ha ha, with that you could overlcock to around 2.8Ghz probably. Thats the equvalent of the biggest single core AMDs.

i don?t know jack about OC'ing so im a little apprehensive about trying it
this was the cpu i was looking at, CPU
i don?t know if its a Venice core but its the one with the 90NM core

but if I have to spend a little more money then I will, the reason that I was looking into this one was because I was going to use this for about a year and wait for the prices to go go on the FX and the 4000 and the X2 and things like that. I was just going to get what I can afford now.
i have a good CPU fan so i dont need to worry about cooling, FAN

yeah I've never seen anyone do worse than 2.4 Ghz with stock cooling. Get a XP-120 with the fan I was talking about, put the vcore NO HIGHER than 1.6v and you should be able to get 2.8Ghz fairly easy with a good MOBO (DFI Ultra-D for max OC).

EDIT: Just took a look at your CPU. Thats not a great combo. The fan is great. You don't need a Processor in a Box because it comes with a fan. You can save money by going OEM. OMG look at that price!!!! I dont like tigerdirect as much dude. I built my SOYO custom from them and ended up missing a couple parts when they shipped it. Seriously look at Newegg. Better shipping, and its only $150.

Thats a good MOBO but I would still look at the DFI Ultra-D if you haven't bought yet. And to learn to overclock AMD's look here. GREAT GUIDE! Follow step by step you can't go wrong. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...?catid=28&threadid=1497607&STARTPAGE=1

the epox board isn't cheap in canada, the best board is the dfi but then you'll probably have to spend 100 bucks (after tax) on a psu, give a budget and we'll see what kind of hardware you can get for the price
