Gets Good Wireless Signal, yet, Still Cannot Browse Web

I've got a Linksys Instant Wireless PCI Card WMP11 on a Win98SE machine.

I can get the signal and the strength is above 95% always, I can see other computers in my network, I can share, however, the only thing I can't do is open Internet Explorer and browse the web. The Linksys support suggested that I make the Security medium or low... to which it is now... they are all low (Tools > Internet Options > Security).

Yes... IE opens up... but it always displays a page not found, error. Even if it's Yahoo.com or any other big business website. I can ping my own so the signal is definitely working. I just cannot browse the web.

The drivers are the most recent, I moved the PCI card in 3 diffferent slots so far. They all get great signal but IE doesn't browse. I'm not behind a proxy server nor behind a firewall. My PCMCIA works fine with my notebook.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is the gateway being assigned correctly? I thought my dad was nuts he said he's getting a problem similar to this but he claims he can get his pop mail but he can't browse internet. Can you browse internet? Also try a ping to a website.

can the other PC's use the internet? I'm assuming for the moment that they can.

I would make sure that the computer in question is not trying to override the default settings for things like default gateway, or DNS Servers.

I can't recall exactly what the configuration panel looks like in 98, but I'm pretty sure on the DNS tab you want DNS Disabled... (Yes, it seems odd, but if you select that, it will use whatever the DHCP server tells it to.

Run Winipcfg /all (for win 9x) or ipconfig /all (For NT 2k, XP) and check the default gateway.

Tried to ping a website like Yahoo.com, unfortunately I still can't get any results. Amazon, MSN, AOL, they all don't work. I can ping myself but not to others (including the computers in my network).

The other PCs... yes, they are all doing fine. Two desktop computers upstairs are connected wired (Linksys Wireless Router/4 switch). I also have a notebook, Linksys adapter PCMCIA, works perfectly well.

This Win98SE is located downstairs via Wireless and can't get internet browsing to work (i.e. Yahoo, Amazon, etc.).

The DNS is disabled... I have DHCP as automatically (if I can remember because I'm away from home). Gateway... I checked... and compared the numbers to my notebook. All the same.

I figured... what happens and if possible to delete IE and then install it again? If I re-install it, don't I need to get access to the net?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Your Notebook can connect? I would try ping out to a Ip Address try 66.218.71.81 if this does not work then it might be a gateway problem, if it does work then it is probibly a DNS problem. Also, make sure that your WEP key, channel, and SSID are all the same. Sometimes if the SSID has a capital letter and the hosts SSID doesnt then it will not work. Another thing you might want to check is the settings for you DHCP server. Some require that you have a specific mac address to join. Also, might want to check the IP address and make sure that it is assigned one (winipconfig or ipconfig in console)

So I ping 66.218.71.81. My notebook got 4 replies, whereas the Win98SE requested timeouts. So is this gateway problem and how can I solve the issue?

I logged onto my notebook and wired desktop seeing that they all had different IP address, as well as the Win98SE. All different IP addresses.

SSID are all same, lower case, by default, it is linksys

WEP key and Channel are same.

Help. Thanks in advance.

Try setting up manual IP's and then point DNS on the machine that cannot connect to the IP address of the one connecting to the internet.

Check the Subnet mask, And if possible could you report the IP address that you see? The gateway address needs to be the same as the one on the notebook. and the first 3 digits should be the same, for example the gateway could be 42.53.83.1 and the notebook could have 42.53.83.199 and still work as long as it has the gateway set to 42.53.83.1

subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (same)
default gateway: 192.168.1.1 (same)
ip address: 192.168.1.100 (XP Pro; notebook); 192.168.1.104 (win98SE; desktop)

I also manually typed in the IP address "104", and the DNS.

Still doesn't work.

Remember guys, all I want is to be able to browse the web. I can read other computers in the network.

i dont know if this help but

go uncheck the box that says let windows configure my wireless connection

and also in pci card utility make sure it does have wep box enabled and also make sure passphrase is same as on main computer

I'm having trouble locating where to uncheck the box that says let windows configure my wireless connection

Under the Wireless PCI Card Configuration Utility in the Encryption tab, I enabled both 64 and 128 bits. I did a restart in the computer to take effect, but still I cannot browse the web.

I had it set for Manual Entry, for the Passphrase. I just didn't want to mess up my other 3 computers once it's changed in the Linksys Manager.

Since I'm able to get good reception from the Linksys as well as recognizing other computers in the network, do you think I should uninstall Internet Explorer and re-install it via burned CD-ROM?

Try this to get your Internet working-
In IE, Click on Tools then Internet Options.
Click on the Connections tab.
Click on the Setup box. Choose the option for manual setup/using a LAN, should be the bottom. Choose LAN, next, uncheck all, Next, next...

I would put all your Network settings back the way they were before. Sounds like it was working fine before. The PC could access the net, just needed to know how...

Hope this works for ya.

had the same problem with IE on my pc, running through a router connectec to a cable modem

mozilla worked fine, so did everything else requiring an internet connection...ie though i had to change the connection settings, its simple, and was the first thought i had when reading your post...hope that does it...that way you can go download FirebirdMozilla yourself 😀

So I used Jbritt's latest idea.

I ran the Setup configuration of the IE many times... I still can't.

I decided to install AOL... because I figured it might be IE's problem. I can't even connect to AOL. Dammit!

I'm all out of ideas guys. Why don't I list the components I've got in the Network when I right-click Network Neighborhood and click properties.

Here's the order I got... and this is in Windows 98SE.

The following network components are installed:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Microsoft Family Logon
- Dial-up Adapter
- Dial-up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
- Instant Wireless PCI Card
- Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter
- WAN Miniport (ATW)
- NDISWAN -> Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter
- NDISWAN -> WAN Miniport (ATW)
- NetBEUI -> Dial-up Adapter
- NetBEUI -> Dial-up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
- NetBEUI -> Instant Wireless PCI Card
- TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter
- TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter #2 (VPN Support)
- TCP/IP -> Instant Wireless PCI Card
- File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

Primary Network Logon:
Microsoft Family Logon (the same with another Win98SE Desktop that is internet wired directly from router)

When clicking on:

Instant Wireless PCI Card Properties:
Bindings tab:
. . . -NetBEUI (checked)
. . . -TCP/IP (checked)

NetBEUI Instant Wireless PCI Card Properties:
Bindings tab:
. . . -Client for MS Networks (checked)
. . . -File and Printer sharing for MS Networks (checked)
. . . -MS Family Logon (checked)

TCP/IP Instant Wireless PCI Card Properties:
Bindings tab:
. . . -Client for MS Networks (checked)
. . . -File and Printer sharing for MS Networks (checked)
. . . -MS Family Logon (checked)

Advanced tab:
Property - Allow Binding to ATM; Value=No

NetBIOS tab:
Grayed out checked on "I want to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"

DNS Configuration tab:
Bubbled-in: Disable DNS

Gateway tab:
Installed gateways: no IP address (none)

WINS Configuration tab:
Bubbled-in: Disable WINS Resolution

IP Address tab:
Bubbled-in: Obtain an IP address automatically

==================
Internet Options under Tools in IE

Button LAN Settings...
checked box "Automatically detect settings"

THANKS for your help -- am still unable to solve the problem even when I installed the PCI card in another different computer.

If you can't ping sites then it's some other problem, not a problem with your IE. You say you can see other computers, but can you access them and transfer files? They might be there from a previous hardwired connection.
How about your notebook? Is that wireless or not?
What protocols did you have installed on the win98se? Make sure you have tcp/ip.
