I don't watch TV now because it sucks ass. Who cares if it is analog or digital? Digital only means it is a higher quality ass-sucking.

I reserved a coupon anyway. The way our personal rights are being eroded, having a TV in your house will probably be made compulsory at some point (Richard Bachman's Running Man anyone?)

So, if I get a set-top conversion box, does it do the channel changing? If I have an analog PVR card, will I be unable to use it to change the channel for recordings, thus forcing me to buy a digital card?

Yes, sucks ass doesn't it.

The convertor boxes are for over the airwaves converstion, not cable or satelite. There is a FAQ somewhere that states this.

Edit: Found in the FAQ on site:

7. Can I use the converter box along with my cable box?
No. Converter boxes from this program work only with over-the-air broadcast television signals, not cable or satellite service.

This coupon will do nothing for your cable or satellite service boxes. Also, if you have a built in digital tuner for over the airwaves broadcasts (HD over the air for example), you will not need one of these.

i'm sure they are using a small part of the billions the airwave auction will generate to subsidize the boxes

no tax dollars will be needed

Piss on that. Pay off part of the trillions of debt that we owe with the money instead of subsidizing people who use free airwaves to watch TV.

If that's the case, do I get $40 coupons to go to new cable digital boxes when my cable company goes 100% digital in the future? 😛

but you don't need that box for satellite, right?
who actually uses an antenna anymore anyway?

in kansas i did some satellite work and *a lot* of people still had antennas that they used when it rained bad enough that the satellites were no good.

one couple in particular hired us to replace their antenna that took a lightning hit, and were very excited to have it back and working (even though they had satellite, go figure)

Aw come on, get your priorities straight. Watching the latest series of crap on FOX (what's this newest one, some Truth game thing) trumps boring stuff like paying off debt.
At least until they create some sort of debt-paying reality program.

😉

TV converter boxes are not expected to be available in retail stores until late February or early March. You will receive your Coupon(s) then. The Coupon will expire within 90 days from the date it is issued.

thanks OP

,,mabe the'll do that with all the carbon con revenue.

Just saying, won't investing in converter-box company stock right now be REALLY beneficial in a just 2-3 years? Think of all the people who won't make the transition and will just buy the box. Too bad I know NOTHING about stocks to invest in them myself.

Heh.

What?!? 😕

The government actually relies on the majority of the people having televisions and watching the nightly news. I think that they really ought to stop that, but it's there nonetheless. It's right there with reliance on USPS for accurate mail delivery. Because the government is forcing the transition to digital transmission rather than analog, there would be an uproar if the government caused millions of televisions to suddenly stop working. I am, for the most part, glad that they've issuing coupons for the purchase of a digital tuner.

At any rate... I know *many* people that still use OTA antennas, even those that have satellite. Accurate local HD broadcasts, for one reason. Another is continued local coverage in case satellite coverage goes down (either altogether or just for local channels).

..well, the world would be alot better off if most watched a lot less. After all, it's only TV.

I don't feel like debating the usefulness of television. FWIW, I don't watch all that much television. I quoted you because I found your LOS statement to be off base.

Yeah, that whole atmosphere thing kind of gets in the way.

That's like saying you can't get AM or FM radio without site of the broadcasting tower. NOT.

"Line of sight" does not mean you can literally see the transmission tower with your eyes.

The misinformation in this thread alone makes me think we'll be seeing a y2k situation come end of the year.

.... ok ?

1. Finally they are going all digital, channels will be clear.

2. 30,000,000 x $80 = $2.4 Billion in coupons (the federal gov. will make $100 Billion selling the available space, so it's a win win for them)

3. National Wireless Broadband provided by Google?
