3mg of Melatonin. (they come in 1.5mg and 3mg)

Don't go more than 3mg though, 1.5mg would probably work just as good.

Melatonin is all natural (which is good), you can pretty much buy it anywere you can get other types of drugs (no not that kind).

Also, 3mg is the max safe dosage. This stuff is really potent.

Edit2: Melatonin is the same stuff in milk that makes you feel tired.

What happens if you megadose on the stuff?

Do you feel drowsy or weird in the morning?

That's pretty much what I do, but I don't have sleeping pills.

So I take pain pills. But then since a big part of WHY I can't sleep is pain, I guess it works out ok....

Sometimes a good shot of RUM helps as well, or some type of booze. Though I don't really LIKE booze all that much.

And no, it's basically just a lot of what your body already produces so no, you don't feel drowsy the next morning. I have no idea what happens if you megadose the stuff, so who wants to find out :) (or not)

Try taking a warm shower about 30 minutes before heading to bed.

Sleeping pills/medications definitely work, but nearly all of them are addictive to some degree...so use them with caution, and only when necessary.

The reason I asked is I used to take way more than you suggested with no ill effect. I would stack them with Tylenol PMs and OTC sleeping pills. Still took a while to fall asleep.

Well, the body only produces VERY LITTLE melatonin, so you really don't need more than 1.5g. Anything more than that is just that, extra junk you don't really need. 1.5g is probably more than 10x what the body actually produces (not really sure on the #, but I know the body doesn't produce a lot of that stuff).

It's 2 in the morn., and I'm going to bed. So goodnight :)

I write. If I can't get to sleep it's because so many thoughts are just running through my head... if I get those thoughts on paper somewhere I'm usually fine. Plus it addresses those issues that are floating around in your brain by making you think about them and reason with them.

Very true. The body produces (small amounts) of melatonin on a natural cycle, meaning that even if you're having trouble getting to sleep, unless you've shifted your schedule around lately (you're trying to get to bed earlier than usual, etc.), it's probably not because you don't have enough melatonin in your system.

If you are going to take it, it's recommended to do so 2-3 hours before sleeping, as that's how long it generally takes for the body to begin reacting to its presence (although higher doses might change that).

However, it should be mentioned that while no long-term studies have really been done on humans, prolonged melatonin ingestion in rats and other animals has produced various problems, such as Parkinsons'-esque movement impairments and difficulties with reproductive fertility.

Also, if you have too much melatonin, your body might stop producing it all together, which = worse for sleep. Usually, when I can't sleep it's due to the fact that my brain is still ready to do stuff. I picture black - not nothing, just the color black. I also try to focus my thoughts on the word or concept "black." You can't think about nothing, it's far too difficult. However, I find when I focus my thoughts onto one thing, my brain usually shuts down enough so that I can fall asleep quickly. Just my $.02

I've done this as well in the occasional instance when I can't fall asleep. I personally choose to focus on some simple, repetitive, relaxing concept...usually imagining something like a calm shoreline. I'm pretty sure even doing the stereotypical counting of sheep could end up working for some people.
