Uhm Jiggajays, yesasia does not sell bootlegs... The official dvd and vcds are already released in Asia. In case you havent noticed, the movie was released months and months ago in Hong Kong and only just recently released in the US. Why not do a little research before making wild accusations and talkin your pirate rabble.

jiggywhatever,

what's wrong with subtitling a VCD? Do you work for the VCD industry that you know for sure this is a pirated one? Maybe you should complain to the anti piracy agency or something if you are so sure instead of blowing off steam here.

What are you, retarded? Every Chinese movie I've seen has subtitles, both in Chinese and English. Think about it, if you have seen DVDs, don't they have English subtitles? And oh my gosh, the DVDs are American movies released in America, so maybe they should only have everything but English subtitles?

I have never seen a Jet Li VCD without subtitles.

(im chinese) in china, there are many dialects and they need subtitles for those who dont speak a certain one. the main subtitle is mandrian, for those who speak only cantonese and vice versa. the english below the chinese subtitle is for yall americans.

<< Especially at the end when the lady jump off the bridge. What kind of crap is that. >>

First of all it has to do with Lo's little story. It's also an inside storyline... Jen's mastery of "flying" precludes her from death by falling. Most Chinese people know this, but it's new to Americans so it seems strange.

My personal experience with the movie: I thought it was an awesome movie. Definitely will be one of my favorite movies of all time. For those of you who thought the actions were cheesy, I went with a group of people that are die-hard wushu fanatics. (Wushu is a martial art based on kung-fu and the like, and is more of a performance art rather than combative technique. Jet Li does wushu, not kung-fu. He used to be in the Beijing Wushu team.) These guys spend over 15 hours a week practicing wushu in UC Berkeley wushu club. Anyway, they *loved* the martial arts. They especially loved all of the weapon forms. Not to spoil the movie or anything, but when Michelle Yeoh first held up the broad long sword, the guys yelled out "No Way!" out of amazement. Even though I don't know much about martial arts myself, I liked what I saw.

Yes, the flying can throw off a lot of people, but I think I liked their style of flying around better than the older generation of movies where they flew around endlessly. I thought all of the wall-walking scenes were just plain amazing.

I don't know what ethnic/cultural background people on this forum are, but among the people I know, the only ones that didn't like it were those who were not too familiar with eastern asian culture. The whole tiger and dragon, kill or be killed theme were confusing to me as well, but as a simple fairy tale, I think it was well written.

Oh, and the Jen character(Zhang Ziyi, I think?) is hot! :)

Honestly, there have been better Chinese Martial Arts films (the "Swordsman" Series comes to mind), but alas, this is an Ang Lee movie, and he already is well known in America (courtesy of "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Ice Storm").

What we are witnessing is ingenious marketing by Columbia/Sony Pictures. And if it raises recognition about this time of film and the whole genre, I'm all for it.

WuShu is just another translation of Martial Arts, or Kung Fu. Depends on how you look at it, Kung Fu itself is a form of Arts. I was born and raised in Hong Kong and practiced Kung Fu myself, so I kinda know what I am talking about.

Guys, Ang Lee does not make "commerical" production.

His stories are portrayed as a work of "art".
If you idiots classify or critique this movie based on "kung-fu"
or whatever...I am sorry, YOU DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE FILM.

Go watch your action flixs and WWF ;)

If these guys critique this movie for it's martial arts, then they definitely do not watch WWF and if they do, they'll bitch "It's not real! That fall doesn't hurt at all!" :disgust:

A.) 3kingdom: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was not filmed in America. As a matter of fact, it was released in Asia months before it reached American shores.

B.) Hawk: My legit VCD of Chow Yun Fat's "Full Contact" does not contain any subtitles, English or Chinese.

Damit, this movie was awesome!!!!!

Damit....Damit!!! Holy crap...the DVD is 33 bucks.

I liked the matial arts choreography. Was dam awesome! I think it's the same guy who choreographed the Matrix...which also was a dam good movie. The story was pretty good too...but if you can't read and watch at the same time, then the movie probably sucked for you.

Haven't seen this Crouching Tiger yet, but all of my friends (we are Chinese) who have seen it said it's nothing special compared to other Hong Kong movies. It's box office was not good in Hong Kong. The only thing special is it's directed by Ang Lee and released in US. If you like this movie because of the martial arts, you might want to rent other better HK movies.

BTW, most of HK movies (no matter in theatre, VHS, LD, VCD and of course DVD) have subtitles in Chinese and English. However, many subtitles are poorly made (especially in English), and might have different meaning.

i have to agree that CTHD is nothing that special to people who know Hong Kong cinema. It definitely was good but its a bit overhyped in the states. i mean, Oscar??? If you want a really kickbutt yuen wooping movie check out Iron Monkey. Or for killer action look at swordsman II.

Hahahahaha Swordsman 2... that was so hilarious. Well, the wooden horse jumping over the ravine, at least. I liked Tai Chi Master :p

No way,
Five DEADLY Venoms...back in the day!!! Is what I'm talking about...that jumping off the cliff thing at the end of Crouching was like a french film gone awry, anyway, I get the meaning of her jumping off, but I think they really want a sequel since she could fly right?...hahahaha:D

Okay, does anybody else share my feeling that Chow Yun Fat lives through at the end? I mean, what's one tiny needle compared to an invincible guy like him, and the antidote is right there. Coming back from death isn't something strange in Hk movies. I mean, it doesn't show him getting buried or anything, and Jen's falling off the bridge doesn't go further to show her colliding with a *thwat* on the dirt, so maybe the film is hiding stuff for the sequel here. Hopefully so, cuz I hate to see Chow Yun Fat dies and all because of the silly girl.

wow... I had no clue there were so many people completely ignorant to the workings of vcd's. I'm white, CDM girlfriend (chinese domestic product-civic owners will get the humer -jdm-:D hehe)

vcd players are not quite as widely available here, but many dvd players will play vcd's too. why would the manufacturers worry about that? because vcd's have been HUGE in china for many years. much bigger than vhs.

another FYI... they subtitle a lot of american flicks. they'll subtitle completely legit copies of films. My girl's mom brought back the godfather 1~3. all had subtitles. it was kinda funny to see what the translations were... haha, and I love how the translated the names into characters.. :D

guys, you really need to learn more about this. VCD's shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks, unless they are legit. most vcd's we are offered are bootleg, but you can tell which ones are legit and which are bootleg within a few seconds. it isn't that tough to see :D

Thank god I watched the movie before reading this thread full of spoilers. At least the spoilers aren't as bad as spoilers for The Sixth Sense, which would totally ruin the movie.
