Get rid of command bar in Vista! (Now with Pictar)

I haven't found a way to do this. The bar is completely redundant and takes up valuable screen real estate, but MS decided to not only include it in EVERY damn explorer window, but make it impossible to remove?

I'm not referring to the IE command bar. I'm fine with that 🙂

THIS is the command bar

Any ideas on how to get rid of Vista's command bar?

Stealth edited to make this clear:

I have vista. I'm trying to get rid of the command bar that vista shoves into every explorer window.

Please define what you mean by "Command Bar." Are you talking about the Menu Bar, the Title Bar or what?

Ah so des ne! No, youcan't get rid of it but you can customize it.

C-Bar

And, this video really explains how to use it. It seems to be very useful.

Look, if I could at least customize it I wouldn't mind, but there's no way to do that either. That article is for the IE command bar, not the explorer command bar. Can I do anything at all with this thing?

Since I have 1920x1200 screen res, the command bar has never bothered me. But, I do agree that it is quite useless. I searched and I could not find a way to disable it.

If you search through your registry (WinKey + R, regedit) you will find multiple keys that have the word "commandbar" in it. If you feel so inclined, you could try editing some of them to see what happens. Just remember to back everything up before making a change, and also remember that any changes won't occur until reboot.

Sure! You can expend lots of energy fussing over it then loop in a bunch of other people to help you fuss.

People calling it useless clearly haven't tried using it. I never find myself hitting ALT to get the old menus back, everything I need is right there. Amazingly I see people fumbling around all the time looking for folder options when all they need to do is hit the giant green organize button.

Yes, it can be a pain when Microsoft decides to move stuff around, but if you give things a shot, you'll find it works well.

I guess having a high post count doesn't preclude being a troll.

It seemed to me to be a decent request. I've tried it, don't like it and want to lose it. Thanks to all who suggested ways to customize it or suggestions on how to get rid of it.

It seems this eyesore is here to stay.

Well, my Vista must be better trained. I am in the Explorer Window, and if I go to View, Toolbars, and click on Customize, it lets me decide what is on the Command Bar. Then I use it. It's a great time saver. Even better is the LINKS bar.

Sometimes it is not easy to re-learn that which you think you ought to already know. The peaceful alternative is to simply ignore it and remove everything from it.

There's no toolbar option in Vista's Windows Explorer, that's Internet Explorer.

Bullshit. It is worthless to me. For me it is easier and quicker to just right click or use a keyboard shortcut if I need to do or change anything. I've never once used ALT to get the old menus back. I changed the folder options once in the control panel and I haven't touched them since.
Not that I really care if it stays or goes, because as I mentioned, it's only like 20 out of 1200 pixels on my screen. But for those that want it gone, I don't see why it couldn't be an option for them.

Hey when I thought you were talking about something that could be fixed I offered a suggestion to fix it. Once you properly explained yourself several posts later I realized it couldn't be fixed and said so.

At this point you aren't getting the answer here so why don't you instead go find the answer and come back with it? Might want to fix your avatar too. It gives you away.

Out of curiosity, is there a way to add the old Windows XP Common Folder Tasks to the Command Bar? Such as a copy button, move button, etc...

I'm still not sure exactly what the Command Bar is. I went to Explorer in Vista Ultimate, and did this screen clip and annotated it.

Is this the Command Bar?

Bar

In that case, there is no way to alter it because it is a part of the OS. When you select any item in the left pane, the Command Bar items change also and show relevant available tasks. This is a very good addition and very useful.

Learn to use it and you'll like it, folks.
