South Florida is battling a growing infestation of the giant African land snail.
The snail is considered one of the most destructive invasive species, feeding voraciously on more than 500 plant species.
They can also eat through plaster walls, which provides the calcium content they need for their shells.
Experts recently gathered at a science meeting in Gainesville to seek the best way of eradicating the snails.
According to Denise Feiber, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, more than 1,000 of the snails are being caught each week in Miami-Dade county and 117,000 in total since the first snail was spotted by a homeowner in September 2011.

They are supposedly here in Trinidad and Tobago but I haven't seen any. I also didn't see any in Barbados when I was there. :hmm:

$1 bounty on wild-caught African snails. Give the kids something to do this summer. Or spray the entire state in pesticide.

Or as mentioned, if you want to be safe, thermonuclear ordnance loosed from orbit.

So we first introduce animals where they don't belong and then we massacre them?

Was this snail released into the wild by someone like all the other "alien" species?

Those snails aren't edible. They carry diseases and parasites. And they eat substantial amounts.

When I was in Okinawa, the area I was in (Chibana) was overrun with them. If you walked on the grass in the morning, it would be like walking on eggs.

Same thing if you were driving on a road that was still wet from the morning dew.

If you kicked them, they would split and slime you boots big time.

I hate, hate, hated those things.

Probably hitched a ride in aquariums with other exotic fish.

How come we never get anything worth a shit invading over here?

Floridians are thrilled to note that wild French truffles are invading the local forests.

Maine is pleasantly surprised to find schools of Japanese tuna off the local coast...
