okay I just became interested in the series after seeing RE 5 and people mentioning that RE 4 was one of the best games ever. I did some research and it seems the more stuff I look at the more lost I become. there are several different games on different platforms so I dont even know where to start with this series.

I just bought a Wii and picked up RE 4 because it seems that version was better than the pc or ps2. problem is I havent even opened it since I might be returning the Wii because its too damn noisy when reading my Dad Space disc. so should I get a ps2 and get some RE games including RE 4 or should I just get RE 4 for the pc and use an xbox360 controller? from what I understand the pc version of RE 4 came with less content than PS 2 and Wii versions.

I just need some advice on what to do and what platform to do it on.

yeah how silly of me to let constant clicking get in the way of playing a game. lol. it was VERY annoying especially at night when everything was quiet. I could here it from upstairs just clicking away. anyway the Wii packed up and going back so I am looking at either PS2 version or pc versions now.

a) why not exchange the wii for another one?
b) RE series is overrated and has shitty camera, shitty controls.

I tried another one and it did the same thing. yeah i have heard that about the controls. maybe a controller would be better than a mouse/keyboard for RE games but I am not too good with a controller for shooting.

I liked the original on the PSX, as well as RE2, and I liked it as well, very good atmosphere (for its time that is). Then I played Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, it was good, similar in some ways to the original, but not as good as RE2. Then later I played RE3, on the PSX, and other than Nemesis (the enemy I mean) there was nothing much interesting going on, more puzzles than the others though, a little less "action", it was decent, I guess, but I never finished it myself (although I did watched the ending a couple of years later, I didn't miss a lot). I never played any others ever since, I've never even seen any RE4 footage, I just never looked for it not even on YouTube, no interests.

The Silent Hill franchise is much better in my opinion, especially the second one, I played it on the original XBOX, it was amazing, even the Silent Hill movie depicts a lot of SH2's atmosphere and even locations to some extent. I'm really not interested in RE5 either, it looks like House of the Dead with today's graphics standards. But to answer your questions directly, I would say that if you want to "start" with the Resident Evil series, you should definitely play the first and the second, of course, their graphics and interface and everything else is old, it could well be very boring today for many, but on paper it would simply make sense to start at the beginning... and certainly not with RE4.

I though RE3 was the best of the series so far...RE4 great also....RE5?...good game but I hate the save game system.

RE was cool back in the day.

I played it on PS; it's the only one I finished. I rented RE2 but got stuck and gave up.

RE was the first survival horror game I ever played. The limited ammo and inventory made for a tense, entertaining experience. It was was the first game that made me think in terms like "should I shoot that or save the ammo for later?"

It also established the tradition of classically inane voice acting.

Yea, the Resident Evils on the PS were brilliant. I didn't care much for any of the other RE's (RE4, RE5, Code Veronica, RE Zero...)

Silent Hill 1 was awesome, but I don't think that game aged nearly as well. I have yet to play the rest in the series.

If you want to see how the RE series started, seeing as you have a GC, I would recommend picking it up Resident Evil Anniversary Edition. It has RE4, RE0, and RE1. RE0 and RE1 are remakes of the Playstation version with (very) updated graphics and look gorgeous (even though they are 7 years old). Too bad you picked up RE4 already, the anniversary edition is supposed to be about $30 :\

I already returned the Wii because it was way too annoying while reading dual layer discs like Dead Space Extraction.

Basically this. Knowledge of the overall "plot" is really not that relevant to enjoyment of the game. RE4 was my first foray into the RE universe and I knew nothing about the characters or entities except that Umbrella = evil corporation. Oh, and that killing spanish zombies is fine, but killing african zombies makes you an OMGRACIST

They got more commercial as the series went on, but I still like them all :).

RE1, and RE2 were the best imo, scared the shit out of me as a kid!

RE4 was a major departure from the established series, with Leon and Ada (with a cameo by Wesker) really being the only carry-over characters from previous games. The rest of the games though, RE5 included, have a continuing plot that is actually pretty decent.

The best part about RE4 and RE5? Being Wesker in Mercenaries mode.

OP, it's too bad you returned your Wii, since you can buy that RE Anniversary Collection others have talked about. I already own all the games on their original systems, so it wouldn't apply to me, but for a newcomer, it'd be a great deal. The REmake for the GameCube is still an awesome game, even after all these years.

I would not recommend playing the original RE under any circumstances though. It is...painful, though the voice acting is classically bad.

"Here take these...maybe YOU, the MASTER OF UNLOCKING, could use them!"
"Blood...I hope this is not CHRIS'S BLOOD!"
"Stop IT! Don't OPEN that DOOR!"
"You were almost a JILL SANDWICH!"
