Get Into PC question

Hi,

Finally doing a new build. Been running XP Pro on older video editing machine.

I know I am a little behind the times, but I want to install Windows 7 Professional 32-bit SP-1 on the new build. Digital River is no more, but on another thread here I saw a recommendation to download it from GetIntoPC
http://getintopc.com/

Can you verify if this is the best option?

I have also seen links via the Windows 7 Forums.....

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

.....to download it from another site using qbittorrent.

Then there is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Profe...ywords=windows+7+professional#customerReviews

So after I install it, where would you recommend I get the product key from? I plan to mess with it for 60 - 90 days before I activate it. I have read how to extend it, but at some point I have to activate it so where should I get it?

My current version of Windows XP Pro was a retail version that I purchased, but I don't want to transfer it. Should I buy a retail version of Windows 7 Pro instead of OEM? If so where?

Thanks for the input.

John

Does that also contain the 32-bit version and activation key?

Also, does that mean you do not recommend the retail version or is it not available.

John

Why would you want the 32bit version? And no, it's not included, but you can choose it for the same price.

The OEM editions of Windows 7 only include the "bit version" that you are buying. The retail packages included both, but MS no longer sells retail versions. Only OEM.

Are you certain that you need 32-bit? Newegg sells the 32-bit OEM versions too, but I don't know if the promo code applies; it might cost more.

The OEM packages DO include an activation key, but once activated, OEM editions cannot be moved to new hardware (unless the mobo dies, and you still have to call MS then).

The keys are bit-agnostic, meaning, that you can use a key that you purchased as 32-bit or 64-bit with the opposite bit-ness install media, if you like. You just have to obtain that install media yourself.

Then it doesn't sound like I should bother downloading the OS from Get Into PC since you can only get the activation code with the software anyway unless I want to use it later to upgrade to 64-bit in which case it sounds like I can use the same activation code. I do know that OEM is only for a single motherboard which is why I asked about the retail version which you said is unavailable.

I double checked regarding the editing program. I use Vegas 8 pro. That won't work with 64-bit Windows 7. They came out with a free upgrade to Vegas 8.1 which they claimed would work with Windows 7 64-bit, but it didn't work. It would mean upgrading the editing program to a later version which I don't want to do. Vegas 9 was a good program, but after that the program became a resource hog and a nightmare. You can't buy Vegas 9.

Thanks for all this help.

Regards,

John

After posting on the Vegas forums it seems that in fact Vegas Pro 8.0c WILL work with Windows 7 64-bit.

So that is what I plan to buy.

But just to be clear, the OEM version is all that is available right now and my best bet would probably be Newegg. Do I have that right?

Thanks,

John
